Bristol Rovers could be handed a major boost this weekend when they host Rotherham United with Promise Omochere closing in on a return to action two months on from suffering a serious hamstring injury on New Year’s Day.

Rovers’ club-record signing hasn’t featured for the Gas since being withdrawn in the first half of Inigo Calderon’s second game in charge against Leyton Orient.

The injury was expected to keep the striker out of action until closer to the Easter period but Calderon confessed that there is a chance that Omochere could be involved in the squad to face the Millers this Saturday which would mark exactly two months since he picked up his issue.

Meanwhile, there was also bad news ahead of this weekend with Kamil Conteh still expected to be sidelined for a sustained period of time with a knee issue that has kept the midfielder out since Boxing Day.

Discussing injuries ahead of Saturday’s clash with Rotherham, Calderon told Bristol Live: “Kamil is going to be a long one. We cannot put a date on that. But Promise is promising. He looks much better. I will say that even he could be involved in the squad for Saturday. So that’s really good for the team, for the club, for himself obviously.”

Leading up to his injury, Omochere had looked the sharpest he has been in a Rovers shirt since his arrival from Fleetwood Town in the summer, returning from a previous issue.

Goals in back-to-back matches around the Christmas period against Wrexham and Exeter City saw the 24-year-old double his goals tally for the Gas, returning after a month out with an ankle problem as well as a broken hand.

Rovers are worryingly short of attacking options as they look to steer clear of relegation threat with Gatlin O’Donkor set to be out for another couple of weeks at least with a hamstring issue while Shaq Forde is currently serving a suspension following his red card against Wycombe Wanderers last week.

Only four teams have scored fewer than the Gas’ 33 goals in League One so far this season with Rovers looking to widen their advantage over the relegation zone on Saturday which currently stands at a mere three points with 14 games remaining.

As for Conteh, the midfielder is yet to play a single minute under Calderon having picked up a knee issue between the Boxing Day defeat at Exeter and the Spaniard’s first game in charge at Stevenage.

There had been an element of mystery around what the issue was exactly and it still seems as though a timeline cannot be set.

Elsewhere, there was more positive injury news from Calderon on Ruel Sotiriou and Grant Ward who had been the latest names on the list of concerns.

Ward picked up an ankle issue in the 3-1 win over Burton Albion earlier this month and subsequently missed last week’s defeats at Wycombe and Northampton Town.

Meanwhile, Sotiriou was withdrawn at Northampton with a suspected hamstring problem. However, the pair are seemingly set to be in contention to make the squad on Saturday.

“He’s alright,” the Rovers boss revealed on Sotiriou. “He was just, not protected, but we weren’t fully convinced that he would keep going so we took the decision to change him. He trained fully today so he will be alright.

“Wardy I think is better as well so hopefully he’s in the squad as well.”
