Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Shrewsbury: Defence stand firm to secure rare away clean sheet
Bristol Rovers played out a goalless draw away at bottom side Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday evening in a game that lacked real quality for large spells but did put an end to the Gas' torrid run of four consecutive away defeats.
Salop had the better chances of the first half with Jed Ward forced into two notable saves before the half-time substitution of Promise Omochere for Grant Ward injected some extra quality into Rovers who dominated the opening 20 minutes or so of the second half.
However, it was still Shrewsbury who went closest with substitute Callum Stewart nicking the post while Ward was called into action again.
The Gas' failure to capitalise on their dominance shifted the momentum with Rovers slightly holding on a bit towards the end. However, neither side could find the breakthrough with the contest at the Croud Meadow finishing goalless.
It certainly wasn't a memorable game but, you never know, it may be a valuable point come the end of the season. Here's how we rated the players on the night...

Jed Ward - 8
A first clean sheet back in Bristol Rovers colours for the 21-year-old goalkeeper. Looked more confident dealing with deliveries into the area and made a couple of important saves on a night where he actually wasn't greatly troubled.
James Wilson - 8
Made himself a good attacking asset in the second half with the switch to a back-three seemingly handing the stand-in captain more licence to roam. Excellent defensively as Rovers picked up their eighth clean sheet of the campaign.
Connor Taylor - 7.5
Nice to see the defender back in the side so quickly after missing the Rotherham game with a slight knee issue. Again, extremely solid at the back, helping the Gas towards the clean sheet. Really stood up to the challenge in the latter stages as Shrewsbury pushed.
Sil Swinkels (off for Taylor Moore 81') - 7.5
Very solid display from the Aston Villa loanee bar one difficult moment against David Wheeler in the first half. Looked comfortable in a back-three, winning plenty that came his way. I think we're going to see plenty of the Aston Villa loanee in the final weeks of the season.
Jack Hunt (off for Joel Senior 81') - 7
Decent defensively, playing his part in the clean sheet but may have had one or two scoring opportunities flash back in his head last night with the right-back seemingly in decent positions to score a few times in the first half. Glad he was able to play another 81 minutes, Rovers need to squeeze as much game time out of him as possible between now and the end of the season.
Clinton Mola (off for Lino Sousa 81') - 6.5
Also played his part in the clean sheet. Guilty of some soft giveaways, particularly in the first half, but considering it was the left-back's first appearance since January 28, it was fine. Got in behind a couple of times in the second half, playing as a wing-back. You would have to say he probably did enough to keep his place going into Saturday's game against Huddersfield Town.
Matt Butcher - 6.5
Better in the middle after a disappointing display against Rotherham. Still has played better in a Rovers shirt but seemed to dictate the play more, especially when Rovers were in control in the opening stages of the second half.
Grant Ward (off for Promise Omochere 46') - 6
Inigo Calderon confessed post-match that the midfielder still wasn't at the standards he has set for himself, coming off at the break. Personally thought he was fine, playing that box-to-box role, but certainly hasn't grabbed the last two games by the scruff of the neck as he tends to do.
Isaac Hutchinson - 6.5
Buzzed around throughout and tried to make himself available wherever he could. Looked to be Rovers' best ball carrier and was still impressively charging up the pitch as added time approached having also played the full 90 minutes on Saturday.
Ruel Sotiriou - 6.5
One of the hardest workers in green on the night. Looked to be a nuisance in a more advanced role alongside Chris Martin and produced some excellent hold up play. The link up just wasn't quite there. Arguably lucky not to have been sent off for a challenge late on that held up a Shrewsbury counter attack.
Chris Martin - 6.5
Once again, the striker's workrate never goes unnoticed. Had a few sights at goal and possibly should have done better with a flicked header from a delivery in the second half but, nonetheless, did well to play another full 90 minutes.
Substitutes:
Promise Omochere (on 46') - 6.5
Another nuisance. The striker has now played 75 minutes plus added time within the space of four days, surely that now means he can start on Saturday? Offered the Gas more of an outlet up top and looked as though he was going to either score or assist the breakthrough goal. Frustratingly, it didn't quite happen.
Taylor Moore (on 81') - N/A
Came on late but a poorly mistimed challenge could have certainly led to Shrewsbury winning the game 1-0. Set the hosts up with an overload of bodies but they couldn't take advantage.
Lino Sousa (on 81') - N/A
Injected a bit of life back into the left flank.
Joel Senior (on 81') - N/A
The same as Sousa while helping ensure the clean sheet remained in tact.
