Bristol Rovers' were brought back down a notch from their recent high of back-to-back wins in League One after a 2-0 defeat away at Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon.

Rovers fell behind after just six minutes as James Carragher headed home from a Joe Hungbo free-kick delivery, the latest of far too many goals conceded from a set-piece this season.

The Gas started to grow into the game with Gatlin O'Donkor causing the Latics defence issues, firing a shot on target that Sam Tickle was able to get down to before firing a difficult chance wide from close range.

In the second half, Inigo Calderon's men looked far the more likely to grab the game's second goal as O'Donkor went close again, forcing an excellent save from close range following a corner.

However, a moment of madness from Josh Griffiths saw the Rovers goalkeeper, who had been largely untroubled, play a pass straight to substitute Jonny Smith who made no mistake of scoring Wigan's second.

The Gas very nearly pressed the self-destruct button a minute later as another cheap giveaway saw Thelo Aasgaard rattle the crossbar as Rovers' momentum completely disintegrated.

Here's how we rated the players on a frustrating afternoon at the Brick Community Stadium...

Josh Griffiths - 5.5

After being superb against Barnsley, the goalkeeper had a largely quiet afternoon against Wigan but didn't cover himself in glory for the second goal. The Latics actually failed to force the West Brom loanee into a save but a shaky pass in the build up to Jonny Smith's goal, when Rovers were in the ascendency, saw their momentum disintegrate.

Joel Senior - 5

Came in for Taylor Moore but struggled. The right-back got caught out a number of times and was fortunate that Wigan couldn't capitalise. A nice cross late on towards Chris Martin though, something he didn't do enough.

James Wilson - 6

There will always be question marks in regards to conceding a goal from a free-kick delivery but bar that the defender defended his area pretty well.

Connor Taylor - 5.5

Same as above until the second goal where it was a cheap giveaway, although wasn't helped by the goal kick. Was clearly instructed to get on the ball and drive up the pitch where he can and did it well in fairness.

Lino Sousa - 5

Struggled in the first half in particular, conceding the free-kick that led to Wigan's opening goal as Joe Hungbo and Toby Sibbick caused the left-back some major issues. The Aston Villa loanee did grow into the game but he's better than that.

Romaine Sawyers (off for Shaq Forde 63') - 6

Up until a yellow card for a cynical challenge late in the first half, the midfielder was having a decent half, although there could be question marks over his positioning for Wigan's first goal. Sawyers' presence certainly allows Ward for licence to roam and get forward while the 33-year-old also plucked out a few brilliant balls.

Grant Ward (off for Jamie Lindsay 76') - 6.5

Another tidy display in the middle of the park despite the result. One of the success stories of the Inigo Calderon era so far.

Isaac Hutchinson (off for Chris Martin 69') - 6

Looked dangerous on the ball in the first half without being spectacular.

Ruel Sotiriou - 5

Deployed on the left and struggled to make the desired impact, coming into the side from the off after his goal last week.

Luke Thomas (off for Scott Sinclair 63') - 5.5

Having been a delight to watch last weekend, the winger struggled to offer as much of an impact on the game and ended up getting himself booked on a tricky afternoon.

Gatlin O'Donkor - 6

Worked extremely hard but the striker will have chances flashing back in his mind when he goes to sleep tonight. Two tricky chances in the first half but the one from close range after the corner was a sitter. Sam Tickle did superbly well but the Oxford United loanee would have score had he tucked it a few inches to the left and that would have been a key moment at 1-0.

Substitutes:

Scott Sinclair (on for Thomas 63') - 6

Offered fresh legs but didn't really get into the game.

Shaq Forde (on for Sawyers 63') - 6

Same as above but some nice skill.

Chris Martin (on for Hutchinson 69') - 6

Felt for him. Absolutely zero service after coming on as Rovers conceded their second, bar a cross from Senior late on.

Clinton Mola (on for Sousa 76') - N/A

Came on late.

Jamie Lindsay (on for Ward 76') - N/A

Same as above.
