British silver medallist Germaine Mason dead in motorcycle crash

Olympic silver medallist Germaine Mason has died in a motorcycle crash in Jamaica.

The retired high-jump star, 34, had left a party shortly before the crash at 4.20am, according to Jamaican journalist Abka Fitz-Henley.

Jamaican newspaper The Gleaner says the incident occurred along the Palisadoes main road in Kingston.

The paper added Mason was heading to Kingston when he lost control of the motor bike, crashed, and died on the spot.

Jamaican star athlete Usain Bolt attended the scene shortly after, along with multiple international medallist Michael Frater and a number of other high-profile athletes.

Reports added he was the only person involved in the crash.

Jamaican prime minister, Andrew Holness, has offered his “sincere condolences to the entire sporting fraternity”.

Writing on Facebook, Birmingham-based athletics club Birchfield Harriers wrote: “We are sad to report on the tragic death of Germaine Mason, Beijing Silver medallist in the high jump, who was killed in a motorbike accident today.”
