I would have broken Newcastle United's transfer record if my club got their way

Nicolai Jorgensen has revealed Newcastle United made bids 'far higher' than he expected - only for Feyenoord to turn them down.

It was a different era. An era before the takeover and a £63m move for Alexander Isak, but Newcastle made multiple offers for Jorgensen in the mid-season window seven years ago. In fact, Jorgensen's agent, Mikkel Nissen, revealed that Newcastle 'did a lot to make it successful'.

Newcastle's interest was understandable. Jorgensen had previously helped fire Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title, after scoring 21 league goals in his first season at the club, and the tall striker looked primed to step up in the Premier League after also catching the eye of Newcastle scouts with his goal scoring displays in the Champions League.

However, Feyenoord demanded more than £20m for Jorgensen, which would have been a record transfer for Newcastle at the time, and the Denmark international ultimately stayed put. Now retired, at 34, Jorgensen has pondered what could have been.

"I had the opportunity to make a big change several times," he told Tipsbladet. "And it would have been great to try. Newcastle made some bids which were far higher than what I expected to be sold for.

"But then it wasn’t closed. I don’t think there were any who came closer than them. Feyenoord couldn’t find a replacement and that’s how it ended a couple of times."

Jorgensen would go on to score just eight goals in his final two seasons at Feyenoord before spells at Kasımpasa and FC Copenhagen.
