Bruno Fernandes delivers huge Manchester United injury boost after new absentee emerges

Manchester United hope to have Bruno Fernandes back in their starting line-up to face Arsenal.

The club captain sat out Monday’s defeat at Crystal Palace with a knock but has now returned to training, according to Erik ten Hag.

There were fears that Fernandes would not be ready for Sunday’s match at Old Trafford after United’s update during the week failed to mention his fitness status.

But it has now been confirmed that both the Portuguese midfielder and Scott McTominay are in training with a view to featuring against Arsenal.

However, United will be without Mason Mount for the Gunners match after he picked up a fresh blow. It has been a turbulent debut campaign for the England midfielder, who started the 4-0 loss at Palace last time out in Fernandes’ place.

Ten Hag told MUTV: “It's a minor issue.

“So he's definitely not out for the season. I think a couple of days, then he'll return. Maybe Newcastle is too short but I think he can be available for Brighton [on the final day].”

Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford were both already revealed to have stepped up their comebacks.

Rashford is being earmarked for a place in the squad this weekend but Martinez will likely have to wait until the FA Cup final against Manchester City, after several weeks out with a calf issue.

Ten Hag said: “Rashy, of course, he trained this morning as well, and we have to see how he recovered. But I think it looks quite good and I hope he can tomorrow make the next training and then see if he is available for Sunday.”

He added on Martinez: “Yesterday, Licha came to me and wanted to play on Sunday against Arsenal. But he's not ready yet, he needs a little bit more time to go through the process, but he is so desperate.”

Ten Hag also spoke on Friday of his hope that Victor Lindelof, Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw will be fit for the Wembley clash at the end of the month.

The United boss said: “Luke Shaw had a setback in his process as well but there is still a hope and he will fight to be available for the final.”
