PSG. Southampton. Arsenal. The ‘remember where you were' matches for Newcastle United supporters in recent years. It is no surprise that each of those three aforementioned victories have been scored on Tyneside.

Even in the build up to Wednesday’s second leg triumph over Arsenal, there was a sense this could just be one of those nights. One of those special nights, with a special fanbase, at a special stadium.

For how much longer this iconic will play host to these memorable occasions, who knows? But on nights like these, Newcastle are close to proving unbeatable. The cliche of having a ‘12th man’ doesn't really seem to do Newcastle's bear-pit atmosphere justice.

Before the game, captain Bruno Guimaraes had urged supporters to bring the noise, the passion and the energy of those previous, memorable nights on Tyneside.

“We need an atmosphere like that for tomorrow!!” the Brazilian said when replying to a montage of he, Dan Burn, Anthony Gordon each celebrating winning rather meaningless throw-ins and goal kicks in the famous 2023 Champions League win over Paris Saint-German.

Bruno got his wish. Well before kick-off fans had taken their seats, Wor Flags’ offerings were being waved and the stadium playlist was being worked through. Rockin’ all over the world, Thunderstruck, Local Hero and Hey Jude all setting the tone.

It took just 12 minutes for the first Newcastle throw-in to be loudly celebrated like a chance on goal in front of the Milburn Stand, while even when trailing 2-0 in the closing stages Arsenal's players were jeered, booed and taunted from those in attendances.

However, even over an hour before kick-off the Geordies were making themselves heard - and being complimented for their incredible efforts in the process. "It's so loud out there, I've just had to shout for the last five minutes," admitted one member of the press pack as she entered the Newcastle United media suite 65 minutes before the 8pm kick-off.

There may have been pre match nerves, understandably, given the prize at stake - but there will equally have been a large swathe of fans in attendance on Wednesday supremely confident of getting the job done. One, due to the appetising lead garnered in the first leg but secondly because Newcastle so often raise their level in these games - at this ground.

At a time where Newcastle’s decision makers are pondering whether to stick or twist in terms of stadium plans, with a new £1.2billion stadium build in the city centre being considered, this week’s second leg provided a timely reminder of just how good the Magpies have it.

There remains plenty of positives when it comes to a new location: Bigger attendance, increased revenue and a real show of intent from the owners - but the north east outfit have a valuable weapon with their current surroundings. Arsenal, like many who have came before them, simply could not cope with Newcastle’s raucous atmosphere.

They aren’t the first - and they won’t be the last - team of experienced stars to be shrunken by the sheer force of a packed St James’ Park. With stadium plans in the works - one way or another - it’s worth remembering nights like Wednesday as the club make their 'once in a generation' decision.
