Bruno Guimaraes let out an almighty roar and attempted to whip the crowd up into a frenzy - and that was just the coin toss!

The Brazilian's enthusiasm for the captain's armband appears to have no bounds, and after setting the tone, just by earning the right to shoot towards the Gallowgate End second half, it felt like it would be a night of plain sailing for the Magpies. And so it proved, as Bruno picked passes and urged his troops on.

The former Lyon star just kept driving forward, and it felt like there was no blade of grass he didn't cover. Winning a tackle near the touchline saw Bruno scream into the mild January air.

At places like Brentford and Crystal Palace not so long ago, there had been screams of frustration. This now all feels very different.

Yes, the midfielder who played with such purpose and passion before he was appointed captain appears to be back at the table. And long it may continue!

Remember there were some performances in which Bruno had looked lost and he even described things as "a mess" not so long ago at Brentford. But that is all very much in the rearview mirror for the Brazil ace.

He would enjoy 88 touches against Wolves, ping around 65 passes and put in five crunching tackles. Throw in his inch perfect assist to pick out Alexander Isak for his second goal, it was just about the perfect night for the 27-year-old.

His dream is to lift a trophy as skipper and in this form he may well just be able to pull that off. If being appointed captain required a period of adjustment, he seems well beyond that now.

Alexander Isak stays cool after edging past Alan Shearer record

There aren't too many that can boast of beating an Alan Shearer record but Isak moved into that territory last night. Scoring in his eighth successive game in the Premier League had never been done, until now..

However, he did not bask in any glory and stayed level headed after the match. Isak said: "Records are things you enjoy after your career. I go into every game with the same mentality - to score goals as that helps the team.

"It is about the team. We have been really good. I am happy to be a part of it."

From 12th spot to the brink of Champions League glory

It wasn't that long ago that Newcastle found themselves slumped in 12th place in the table with all hell about to break loose. Incredibly, six wins in a row in the Premier League have transformed the whole picture in the top-flight.

But here's where it might get really interesting for Newcastle as they go in search of more records and further greatness. A home game against AFC Bournemouth can cement their place in the top four before a trip to doomed Southampton and then another game against Fulham to finish off January.

If Newcastle can go into February on 47 points, they will be purring as they prepare to face the likes of Man City, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in spring.
