Brutal Ruben Amorim is giving Manchester United what Erik ten Hag couldn't to cure apathy
Watching on from my view on the Stretford End one thing is certain: teams do not fear coming to Old Trafford as they once did.
A severe lack of home goals in the league this season has often led to a dreary journey after the full time whistle. A feeling of numbness has naturally manifested itself in response to getting beaten at home with defeats against Tottenham, Liverpool, Bournemouth and Newcastle accumulating in an aggregate score of 0-11 to the away sides.
The atmosphere has become extremely toxic at times, most noticeably when Joshua Zirkzee was jeered off in the first half against Newcastle, much to the dismay of many long-standing season ticket holders. However, Ruben Amorim’s no nonsense interviews provide fans with the brutal honesty from a United manager that they have not heard since Ralf Rangnick’s ‘open heart surgery’ comments back in 2022.

Granted, there have been some poor results under Amorim, including three home Premier League losses. But, at least the coach is not dressing these performances up in any way, nor is he spending his post match interviews commenting on the few positives among the overwhelming negatives, as Erik ten Hag did all too many times before.
As Amorim said in his press conference following the draw at Anfield: “Everybody at Manchester United is too comfortable.” United fans have been crying out for so long for someone to take the helm and properly shake up the status quo in order to drive up standards and rid the club of the consistent mediocrity.
As we’re seeing currently, there will be a period of difficulty as players try to adapt to the new system, some of which are simply not good enough to play for the club nor do they fit Amorim’s preference of formation.
The phrase ‘give him time’ is thrown about a lot in football but here is a coach who has a clear style, does not mince his words when challenged by the press and sticks to his guns when times get tough.
It’s clear to see why Amorim’s preference would have been to join at the end of the current season as he would’ve been afforded the chance to get some of his own players through the door that better suit his signature style. Therefore, the true effect of his ability as a coach will probably not be seen until the first half next season at the earliest.
In the here and now the Europa League is a massive opportunity for Amorim and his players to potentially gain some solace from what has so far been a fairly torrid season. Winning the competition appears to be United’s only viable route of qualifying for next season’s Champions League with the gap between the top four and United one that will be difficult to close.
The upcoming fixture against Rangers is critical for automatic progression to the round of 16 and provides the chance for a raucous atmosphere at Old Trafford, a factor that has been missing in the ground for some time.
Despite the difficulties in the recent months, there is still hope for this season in the form of European glory under the guidance of a coach who is clear in his mentality and approach to each and every game.
