De Bruyne boost, Viana relief - Winners and losers from Pep Guardiola's bombshell Man City decision
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola's sensational decision to sign a new contract at the Etihad Stadium has sent shockwaves throughout world football.
While many had assumed the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager would leave the club when his last contract expired at the end of the season, the 51-year-old has committed to at least another year with the Premier League champions.
The decision will have ramifications far and wide in the football sphere but, for City, they are delighted to have tied down the best manager in the game for possibly another two seasons. With that in mind, the Manchester Evening News have taken a look at the winners and losers of Guardiola signing a new deal.

Winners
Man City's season
City's start to this season has suffered from a number of uncertainties. The uncertainty of which players would actually be fit during an unprecedented injury crisis; the uncertainty surrounding City's 115 charges case which could, in a worst case scenario, result in relegation; and the uncertainty surrounding Guardiola's future.
Guardiola has now ended one of those factors and, on the pitch, they can now concentrate on achieving their remaining goals this season. The FA Cup, Champions League and Club World Cup all represent chances of winning a trophy at the end of the season.
But Guardiola's focus will now be on eating into the five point gap between themselves and league leaders Liverpool and there would be no bigger statement of intent if they can go to Anfield and emerge with a victory at the start of next month.
Hugo Viana
Viana's task of replacing the ultra-successful Txiki Begiristain as City's sporting director was already hard enough. But had the former Sporting CP chief had to find a replacement for City's greatest ever manager in his first summer, it would have made his job even more difficult.
Now that pressure has been taken away, it can allow Viana to get his feet under the table and allows him time to prepare the way for the day Guardiola does leave the club. The fact he gets to work alongside Guardiola, rather than without him, should aid his handover process and can only be a good thing for City and their rebuild.
Kevin De Bruyne
De Bruyne's contract at City runs out at the end of this season but he will be buoyed knowing Guardiola is staying and is one of his biggest allies. Talk of a move to the Saudi Pro League won't go away but City want the Belgium international to stay and their bargaining hand is certainly stronger with Guardiola still at the club. De Bruyne has played his best football under Guardiola, too, and the fact he will remain at City will only be good for him in contract talks.
Losers
Rest of the Premier League
When it was announced Guardiola was remaining at City, you could almost hear the groan of their Premier League rivals. After all, City have won the Premier League in six of Guardiola's eight seasons at the club and only Liverpool have managed to break their stranglehold on the title in the last seven seasons.
Many felt the best chance the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool had of dethroning City was without Guardiola in the dugout. Those dreams have now been put on hold for another two seasons.
Brazil
It is no secret Guardiola harbours ambitions of managing in international football. It is why England flirted with the possibility of him taking the Three Lions job before Thomas Tuchel was appointed as manager.
Brazil have been heavily linked with offering Guardiola the keys to their national team but now City have tied down his immediate future, any hopes they had of Guardiola leading them into the 2026 World Cup in USA, Canada and Mexico have now been dashed.
Kalvin Phillips
In truth, Phillips' City career is probably done and dusted regardless of Guardiola's future. But now he is staying at Eastlands, even the most dramatic of turnarounds in the England international's form at loan club Ipswich Town will not change Guardiola's mind.
Phillips was never truly trusted in the City midfield, despite a high profile move from Leeds United. It is best for all parties he moves on permanently next summer.
