Burnley 2 Watford 1 minute-by-minute report
A late fightback couldn’t prevent Watford from slipping to a 2-1 defeat at Burnley.
The home side showed why they concede very few goals with a controlled display and yet the Hornets ended the game on top having clawed a goal back 10 minutes from time when 2-0 down.
There were two changes to the team that started against West Brom last week.
Pierre Dwomoh came into the midfield and with Imran Louza not even on the bench, it seems the Moroccan is still suffering with the illness that meant he missed training on Thursday.
The other change was replacing James Morris with Yasser Larouci – that looked a straight swap which meant the back four would remain.
The home side got their noses in front early and then did a very good of preventing Watford supplying their attacking payers – it was more than half an hour before Giorgi Chakvetadze had a decent run with the ball.
Although they didn’t pepper the Hornets’ goal, Burnley spent a lot of time with the ball in the Watford half and a 1-0 lead at the interval was very fair.
The Hornets changed shape and personal at half-time and had a little more of the ball but the home side added a second and at that stage, considering they have only conceded three goals at home this season- they looked home and dry.
But when Kwadwo Baah volleyed home from a corner with 10 minutes left, suddenly Watford had a lifeline.
The home side suddenly looked a bit nervous and indulged in some timewasting as the Hornets searched, in vain, for a leveller.
Here’s how the game unfolded:
5 - Flemming curls a 22-yard free kick over the bar.
9 – Burney 1 (Anthony) Watford 0
Brownhill found space on the left of the box and although his cross was behind Flemming, it dropped for Anthony who shot down into the ground and the ball span up and out of Bachmann's reach.
19 - Burnley work the ball in from the left and Laurent shoots from a tight angle, but Bachmann holds.
32 - Cross from the right is deflected by Pollock's outstretched boot to Hannibal. He has time to take a touch but then sends his shot from the edge of the box wide.
34 - First time Chakvetadze has been able to carry the ball, he slips it left to Vata who steps inside but his curling effort is blocked.
Half-time – Burnley 1 Watford 0
62 – Burnley 2 (Brownhill) Watford 0
Well-worked from Burnley as Brownhill played a one-two with Hannibal to get into the box and then curled a shot beyond Bachmann.
65 - Chakvetadze floats a free kick into the box, and Sierralta stretches to poke it goalwards where Trafford tips over.
69 - The home side work a shooting chance for Flemming but he fires straight at Bachmann.
73 - Watford get caught playing around at the back, and when Anthony gets into the box it needs a good save with his legs from Bachmann.
78 - Jebbison turns on the left and cuts in before rolling the ball to Baah, who has a touch but shoots wide.
80 – Burnley 2 Watford 1 (Baah)
Game back on?! Corner is half blocked and drops to Baah who lashes a volley into the top corner from 10 yards.
