Burnley are breathing down Leeds United's neck in the Championship title race. After back-to-back draws with Middlesbrough and Stoke City over the festive period, Scott Parker's men returned to winning ways today, beating Blackburn Rovers in the East Lancashire derby.

Goal-scoring opportunities were at a premium for both sides in a tight, cagey first half at Ewood Park. The visitors controlled proceedings for long periods without seriously troubling Blackburn defensively. Despite enjoying the lion-share of possession, Burnley registered just one shot at goal.

But the Clarets broke the deadlock on the hour mark, opening the scoring through Zian Flemming. The former Millwall man dived in at the back post to head home a pinpoint Bashir Humphreys cross.

The result extended Burnley's unbeaten run to 13 matches and sees them go level on points with the Whites at the top of the table. They boast the meanest defence in the division, conceding just three times in 26 outings.

United, who lead the way at the summit on goal difference, are back on the road today as they take on relegation-threatened Hull City, kick-off 3pm at the MKM Stadium. The West Yorkshire outfit, currently on a seven-match unbeaten streak in their quest to secure automatic promotion, have recorded a clean sheet on each of their last four away league trips to face Hull (W2 D2), never before keeping five straight on the road against a single opponent.

Third-placed Sheffield United visit Watford today while Sunderland are in action tomorrow when they entertain relegation-threatened Portsmouth.
