Liverpool face another crucial clash in the fierce battle for Champions League qualification at Turf Moor tonight. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker’s dramatic last-gasp goal secured victory at relegated West Brom on Sunday, before Chelsea beat Leicester in a pivotal FA Cup Final replay last night.
That latter result saw the Blues leapfrog their opponents into third and it now means that deposed champions Liverpool can also jump above Leicester and into fourth spot this evening with a win in their penultimate fixture of an eventful Premier League campaign.
Three points would leave Jurgen Klopp’s Reds leading Leicester on goal difference heading into a final round of fixtures that sees the Reds host Crystal Palace and FA Cup winners Leicester entertain Tottenham.
Klopp has said that reaching the top four at the end of an injury-plagued season would be “one of the biggest achievements ever”, though memories of Burnley’s shock 1-0 win at Anfield in January - one that ended Liverpool’s formidable 68-game unbeaten League run on Merseyside - will still be fresh in the memory.
But while Sean Dyche’s Clarets have been good on the road of late and have no relegation fears to contend with, they have now gone nine successive home League matches without a win following Saturday’s 4-0 thrashing by Leeds.
