A CAFE in Oldbury has gone viral on social media after making a promise to West Bromwich Albion fans if the club made a significant signing before the end of the January transfer window.

Massey’s Cafe made an 11th hour post on the social media site, X, on deadline day (February 3), promising to give out free sausage sandwiches ahead of West Brom’s next match on Saturday if the club signed Southampton striker, Adam Armstrong.

Little did the cafe’s owner, Ritchie Massey, then expect to see the club’s official X account retweet his post to tease the signing moments before it was officially announced Armstong would be spending the rest of the season on loan at West Brom.

Ritchie said: “Never in a million years did I expect this.

“My phone has not stopped since the announcement – it’s been absolutely unbelievable.

“It’s been just non-stop positivity, which has been lovely to see.”

The 38-year-old opened Massey’s, which can be found nestled opposite Sandwell and Dudley Railway Station, with his fiancée in October last year.

Ritchie admitted he did not expect to wake up less than six months down the line to 1.2 million people having viewed a tweet about Massey’s, leading him to order 15kg of sausages just for one day.

As well as stockpiling the sausages, extra staff have been called into work, with planning well underway to ensure the weekend’s sausage sandwich operation runs smoothly and successfully.

He said: “It’s our first business and we are learning as we go, continuing to grow.

“This exposure has been fantastic – everything is dictated by social media these days.”

A Baggies fan himself, Ritchie said Armstong’s signing is “unbelievable” and came as a shock considering the club’s financial situation.

He said: “[Armstrong] joining the club could be the difference between us making it into the playoffs or not.

“He’s a proven goal scorer in the Championship and reminds me a bit of Kevin Phillips.

“Let's get him scoring goals.”

Saints striker, Armstrong, Armstrong has scored three goals in 23 appearances this season, after being “instrumental”, according to BBC Sport, in their promotion to the Premier League last season.

His move to West Brom sees Armstrong reunited with boss Tony Mowbray, who he has previously played for at Coventry City and Blackburn Rovers.

“Get the fryer on”, was West Brom’s simple message to Massey’s and that they certainly will do.

If you’re quick in line, you can grab a celebratory free sausage sandwich from Massey’s on Saturday (February 7) before West Brom take on Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship at 12.30pm.
