“It was a bit of a shock to the system because he's a good mate,” admitted Slimbridge boss Tom Deakin after joint manager Adam Coyle left following their 3-2 defeat to Longlevens last Friday night.

The Swans began life without Coyle by progressing to the third round of the GFA Challenge Trophy on Tuesday after beating Longlevens AFC 5-1 at Thornhill Park.

Deakin said: “I felt it was a good partnership and now we've got to really bounce from that and try and take it forward to where we want to be as a club and where we want to go as a management group and as a team and build on the foundations that were created.”

Slimbridge started the better side and had their first goal within seven minutes. Luca Kapadia was found on the edge of the box, and the striker composed himself before unleashing a powerful strike, beating Harvey Moroney and giving the home side the lead.

Nine minutes later, Kapadia doubled Slimbridge’s advantage after another powerful strike from the edge of the box beat Moroney at his far post.

“It was a good start for him," Deakin said. "It’s a slightly different centre forward to what we've had this season."

Longlevens then tried to get back into the game and had a couple of chances, but Gavin Jones made some excellent saves to deny the away side.

However, two quickfire goals from Kapadia and Josiah McKayle rounded off a dominant 45 minutes from the home side, which saw them take a 4-0 lead into the break.

The away side started the second half much better as they tried to get back into the game, and a bizarre goal from Sam Kelly gave them a lifeline as he made it 4-1.

Despite a strong start in the second half, a poor pass from Moroney meant Kapadia had an easy finish for the home side to regain their four-goal lead and his fourth on the night.

Slimbridge then saw the rest of the game out as they capped off a brilliant display.

Deakin said: “We started brightly. We needed to after Friday night and made a few changes which sort of allow the players to come in and try and shine and see what they could do.

“And I thought about how we played. We managed the game well, and yeah, I’m pleased with what we saw tonight.”
