Young Northern Ireland midfielder Caolan Boyd-Munce caused an almighty stir on social media after scoring a stunning winner against Rangers on Boxing Day.

The 24-year-old rifled home a superb goal to earn St Mirren a dramatic injury time victory at St Mirren Park.

His heroics arrived in the third minute of stoppage time, and after ex-Irish League ace Oisin Smyth had scored from the penalty spot for the Buddies.

The double NI whammy leaves Rangers 12 points adrift of Celtic as they prepare to head into the New Year.

The goal was shared on social media and attracted plenty of comments, and not just from St Mirren's fans.

One said: "Just here for the tears."

One Aberdeen fan joked: "Not that I’m in the position to after today. But this is hilarious."

Another social media user said: "That's some finish btw. Fair play."

This Celtic fan said: "What a Christmas this bring on the 2nd of January."

Another added: "That’s clement out now."

One joked: "Happy St. Stephen/Mirren's Day."

Another Scottish football fan posted: "3 rangers players running to the one st mirren player. School boy stuff."

This man said: "Haha they are back. In their box."

Another said: "There is people all over Europe talking about this Result!!"

St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson beamed afterwards: "I’m delighted with the result. We played with no fear, forced Rangers into errors and I don't think they really threatened in the first half.

"The response (to the equaliser) was magnificent. I think we deserved to win.

"Oisin (Smyth) is a brilliant example to everybody. He knuckled down and is getting his rewards. Him and Caolan Boyd-Munce both showed what quality they have.

"We're a point ahead of last season, it's testament to this group of players and their resilience."

Former Dungannon Swifts ace Smyth added: "I'm buzzing. That's a massive moment for us. I just picked my side (for the penalty) and thankfully the keeper went the wrong way. It's a long time coming that result.”

Match-winner Boyd-Munce said: "It's been a tough few months, so it's more relief than anything."
