Cape Verde vs Egypt LIVE! AFCON match stream, latest score and goal updates today

Egypt benefited from astonishing stoppage-time drama elsewhere in Group B at the Africa Cup of Nations, reaching the round of 16 despite conceding a 99th-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw with group winners Cape Verde.

Facing a nervous wait at 1-1 to see whether they could claim one of the berths for the tournament’s four best third-placed teams, the Pharaohs what they thought would prove a stunning 93rd-minute winner from Mostafa Mohamed. They then allowed substitute Bryan Teixeira to earn already-qualified Cape Verde a 2-2 draw in the 99th minute. But Egypt — who drew 2-2 in all three group games — went through second courtesy of Ghana’s injury-time collapse, in which the Black Stars squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Mozambique.

Even without the injured Mohamed Salah — who returns to Liverpool after this match for treatment on his muscle injury — Egypt were favourites against Cape Verde, but they fell behind on the stroke of half-time when Gilson Tavares swivelled and scored superbly. Former Aston Villa forward Trezeguet was introduced at the break and levelled things up on 50 minutes, before Mohamed’s stunning control and volley put them ahead.

Teixeira then scored to make it 2-2, but that goal changed nothing for the complexion of the group, where Ghana’s late collapse allowed Egypt to finish second despite not even winning a game.

Thanks for joining us for Standard Sport's coverage of Egypt versus Cape Verde. The Pharaohs made it through, but what drama!

Here is the match report.

Full-time. 2-2!

22:06 , Dom Smith

Egypt have done it. 2-2 against Group B winners Cape Verde proves enough for them, with Ghana crashing out after squandering a two-goal lead against Mozambique.Astonishing drama in stoppage time there!

22:02 , Dom Smith

Ludicrous. Egypt are still in with a chance of qualifying despite conceding DEEP in stoppage time through Teixeira because it's now Ghana 2-2 Mozambique. Amazing.

21:54 , Dom Smith

Egypt have scored the goal that will surely see them into the round of 16 if they can hold on.

Running out of time, Mostafa Mohamed controlled the long ball beautifully and looped it over Vozinha. What a finish!

A second penalty scored by Jordan Ayew has extended Ghana's lead over Mozambique. They'll win it from there, you'd suspect, the Black Stars.

Egypt REALLY need a goal to put them into the lead.

Cape Verde 1-1 Egypt

21:14 , Dom Smith

54' Egypt have been excellent at the start of this first half, and through Trezeguet they have their reward.

Now can they complete the turnaround and reach the last 16?

21:11 , Dom Smith

Huge moment for Egypt. Trezeguet, five minutes after coming on, completes a one-two with Hegazy and then slots the ball through Vozinha, who can't keep it out. 1-1.

Back underway

21:07 , Dom Smith

46' Time for Egypt to try to grab this match by the scruff of the neck and turn it around.

Two changes at the break for them. Fathi and Aboul-Fetouh are off, replaced by Hamdi and former Villa man Trezeguet.

Elsewhere in the group

20:58 , Dom Smith

As it stands, Egypt will be finishing third and likely crashing out, with Ghana beating Mozambique in Group B's other game.

The only goal in that match was a 15th-minute penalty scored by Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew.

20:51 , Dom Smith

Real peril for Egypt now, as the half-time whistle blows.

The Pharaohs need to win really, but they will have to come from behind after Gilson Tavares's excellent finish on the turn.

20:47 , Dom Smith

Cape Verde lead!

Egypt are on the brink of crashing out of the AFCON, despite being finalists last time out.

Mendes nods into the path of Gilson Tavares, who puts the Blue Sharks ahead just before the break!

Cape Verde 0-0 Egypt

20:42 , Dom Smith

42' Zico cuts onto his right foot from just outside the box and tries to curl on target but just misses. Couple of decent chances for Egypt as this first half approaches its end.

Cape Verde 0-0 Egypt

20:34 , Dom Smith

34' Sighter for Cape Verde. Gilson Tavares shoots and a good block by captain Ahmed Hegazy takes the ball behind for a corner, which the Blue Sharks waste.

Cape Verde 0-0 Egypt

20:29 , Dom Smith

29' One-way traffic so far, with Egypt having taken all eight of the shots on goal that this match has seen so far.

That said, only three have been on target. The Pharaohs will need to be more clinical if they are to secure the victory they crave tonight.

Cape Verde 0-0 Egypt

20:26 , Dom Smith

26' There's a vuvuzela being blown by someone in the crowd and it's making a right racket. Sounds like some sort of distressed bird.

As noteworthy as any of the football being played on the below right now, to be fair.

Cape Verde 0-0 Egypt

20:21 , Dom Smith

20' DOUBLE SAVE. Vozinha Cape Verde's hero there as he makes a double save to keep the scores level.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace's Jordan Ayew has scored an early opener from the spot against Mozambique, meaning Ghana are now in second place in Group B. Makes an Egypt goal even more important here.

Cape Verde 0-0 Egypt

20:15 , Dom Smith

15' Emam Ashour shoots from distance but goalkeper Vozinha gathers with ease.

Cape Verde 0-0 Egypt

20:13 , Dom Smith

13' CHANCE. Cape Verde growing into the game here, but they give the ball away and Mostafa Mohamed heads over the bar.

First opening of the match.

Cape Verde 0-0 Egypt

20:05 , Dom Smith

5' Lots of possession in the early moments for seven-time AFCON champions Egypt, but Cape Verde have defended with discipline so far.

We're underway here!

Nearly time now

19:49 , Dom Smith

Just over 10 minutes until kick-off now.

Cape Verde know they are through to the second round, but Egypt must win to be sure of joining them. A draw tonight would likely not be enough!

Worth watching one more time!

19:41 , Dom Smith

He may not be involved tonight, but last time out ex-Manchester United flop Bebe scored this outrageous goal for Cape Verde...

Test of their quality

19:30 , Dom Smith

Mohamed Salah is in position at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, having watched the Group A match between Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria there earlier this afternoon.

Now he awaits his nation's decider. In his absence, can Egypt beat Group B leaders Cape Verde and join them in the round of 16?

It's all over in Group A

19:18 , Dom Smith

Hosts the Ivory Coast face a nervous wait to see whether they will make it to the second round.

A 4-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea has done their chances of that no good and left them with just three points — won on the opening night when they beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0.

Equatorial Guinea top Group A with seven points, while Nigeria join them in the round of 16 as a 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau also left them on seven points.

Egypt form

19:07 , Dom Smith

Finalists last time out in Cameroon in 2021, Egypt have certainly not set the world alight in terms of their performances or results at this Africa Cup of Nations quite yet!

They have come from behind to earn 2-2 draws with both Mozambique and Ghana, keeping their tournament alive, but another draw tonight might not be enough to clinch them one of the second round spots for the four best third-place finishers. Victory over the island nation must be their priority tonight.

Here is Egypt's starting XI!

18:58 , Dom Smith

Egypt XI: El Shenawy, Zizo, Hegazi, Hany, Abdelmonem, Fatouh, Hamdi Fathi, Attia, Mohamed, Ashour, Marmoush

Subs: Gabr, Trezeguet, Kouka, Kahraba, Hamdy, Ibrahim, Elneny, Mostafa Fathi, Abou Gabal, Sobhy, Lasheen.

Some potentially bad news for both Egypt and Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah's agent Ramy Abbas has released a statement:

“The injury is more serious than first thought. He will be out for 21-28 days, and not two games.”

“His best chance at participating in the current AFCON is by undergoing intensive rehabilitation in the UK and rejoining the team as soon as he is fit.”

That might spell the end of his AFCON campaign for Salah then.

Cape Verde form

18:36 , Dom Smith

Cape Verde's best finish in an Africa Cup of Nations came in 2013, when they reached the quarter-finals.

The island minnows are back at it, upsetting the odds this time around, and became the first team in the entire tournament to reach the round of 16 after stunning Ghana 2-1 in their opener before a comfortable 3-0 win over Mozambique.

Mohamed Salah injury update

18:23 , Dom Smith

Mohamed Salah will return to Liverpool for treatment on his muscle injury, with a view to flying back out for the latter stage of AFCON should Egypt reach the semi-finals.

Salah has already been ruled out of Egypt's next two fixtures, should they progress to the knockout stages of the competition. He will attend Monday's clash with Cape Verde before flying back to Merseyside to be attended by Liverpool doctors.

An Egyptian FA statement read: "After additional examinations were conducted on Mohamed Salah during the last hours, and after communication between the national team's medical staff and his counterpart at Liverpool FC, it was decided that the player will return to England after the Cape Verde match tomorrow to complete his treatment, with the hope that he will join the national team in the semi-final of the AFCON if we qualify."

Jurgen Klopp said after Liverpool's 4-0 win at Bournemouth: "However long he's out, probably everybody sees it like this, it makes sense that he's doing the rehab with us or with our people.

"I spoke with him directly after, the night when it happened. Since then he's in contact with our doctor. I think he will be back."

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been ruled out for two games and returned to England for treatment after coming off injured in Egypt's draw with Ghana.

As a result, ex-Aston Villa wide man Trezeguet may come back into the team having been dropped last time out for the 2-2 draw with Ghana.

Early Cape Verde team news
