Carabao Cup draw LIVE: Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal learn third-round fate

League Two Barrow were handed a plum tie away at Chelsea in the Carabao Cup while Manchester City, who have won this competition four times under manager Pep Guardiola, were drawn at home to Tom Cleverley’s Watford.

Arsenal will host Bolton, who won at Shrewsbury, as Manchester United will also be at home and face League One Barnsley, who saw off Sheffield United with a 1-0 win on Tuesday.

Wycombe’s reward for winning 1-0 at Swansea on Wednesday is a home tie against Aston Villa, while Coventry will welcome Tottenham. Carabao Cup holders Liverpool, the last of the European sides, will begin the defence of the trophy at home to West Ham in an all Premier League tie.

Newcastle, who edged out Nottingham Forest on penalties on Wednesday, will be heading to the capital to take on another League Two side in AFC Wimbledon. A pair of all-Premier League ties will see Everton host Southampton, who snatched a dramatic 5-3 win at Cardiff, while Brighton host Wolves.

League One Leyton Orient will cross the capital to face Premier League Brentford, while QPR will welcome Crystal Palace in another London derby. League Two Walsall will host Leicester and Fulham will head to Preston. Blackpool will take on Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke are at home to Fleetwood.

All ties will take place on the weeks commencing September 16 and 23. Check out the draw for the third round below

Newcastle’s forgotten man provides timely reminder of what they’ve been missing

Wednesday 28 August 2024 23:11 , Mike Jones

It was Sandro Tonali’s first touch of a ball in competitive football for 10 months, or 308 days, or 41 Newcastle matches. He had sat out the end of their first Champions League campaign in two decades, the whole of Italy’s Euro 2024. Whatever the measure, it was an achingly long absence.

And if there was a sense Tonali was determined to make up for lost time after a betting ban derailed his career and denied him almost a year of football, he touched the ball and, perhaps a couple of seconds later and 18 into the game, Newcastle were ahead.

This draw is slightly different this year.

As the Champions League and the Europa League competitions are longer this year the teams in those competitions cannot meet in the Carabao Cup third round.

For the rest of the draw, it’s business as usual.

Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff giving his post match reaction to Sky Sports: “Massive result for us and hopefully one that kickstarts our season.

“I love working with the manager every day. We want to be tough to beat this year and we got a good result tonight, we want to kick on.

“It is massive. There’s no European football this year so the cup competitions will play a massive part in our season. We want to go as far as we can.

“A home tie would not go amiss! Fingers crossed.”

Gary Lineker opens door to Match of the Day extension after Jermaine Jenas scandal

Wednesday 28 August 2024 21:52 , Mike Jones

Gary Lineker has appeared to express a willingness to stay on as Match of the Day host, after his widely tipped replacement Jermaine Jenas was fired from the BBC over allegations of inappropriate workplace behaviour.

The 63-year-old former England footballer has presented the BBC’s flagship sports show for a quarter of a century but his £1.3million-a-year contract is due to expire at the end of the current season and it is unclear whether he will seek to renew it.

Scott Lindsey apologises for tackle which leaves Brighton’s Matt O’Riley injured

Wednesday 28 August 2024 21:45 , Mike Jones

Crawley boss Scott Lindsey apologised for the challenge by his captain Jay Williams which cut short the debut of Brighton’s new signing Matt O’Riley in the Premier League side’s 4-0 Carabao Cup win.

O’Riley, signed by the Seagulls for £25million from Scottish champions Celtic, was forced off after just 10 minutes following a challenge which infuriated the Brighton bench and left the midfielder sweating on the results of a scan to his ankle.

Dissent among the two simmered and boiled over towards the end when both Lindsey and Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler were booked by referee Alex Chilowicz, although the two exchanged a handshake at the finish.

Matt O’Riley injured on debut but Brighton progress in Carabao Cup

Wednesday 28 August 2024 21:38 , Mike Jones

Brighton booked a place in the third round of the Carabao Cup with a 4-0 home victory over League one Crawley in the first competitive game between the sides since 1992.

Scott Lindsey’s Red Devils put up a brave fight and gave a fine account of themselves against a much-changed Seagulls side.

Goals from Simon Adingra and Jeremy Sarmiento put Brighton in charge, and they scored twice more in the space of two minutes through Adam Webster and Mark O’Mahony before Crawley substitute Jack Roles was shown a straight red card in the last minute.

Everton took a mini step forward with Carabao Cup win

Wednesday 28 August 2024 21:30 , Mike Jones

There is little chance of Dyche or his players getting ahead of themselves after overcoming Doncaster, but it was progress at the end of a chastening start to the Premier League season.

“We want all of the group to lay down markers,” the Everton boss said. “It’s not just about new players, it’s about every player.

“Can they keep evolving, if you like, for the next challenge? That’s what we’ve had to do many times. Challenges come, we have to go again and go again and go again, and there’s another challenge at the moment.

“So, that’s a mini step forward. The reason why I say a mini step forward is because it’s a cup competition.

“The league is the be-all and end-all. We all know that, so our next step is going into Saturday and deliver a performance that can win on Saturday.”

Everton took a mini step forward with Carabao Cup win – Sean Dyche

Wednesday 28 August 2024 21:23 , Mike Jones

Sean Dyche was pleased with how Everton overcame the “noise” around their alarming start to the season to take a “mini step forward” by beating Doncaster in the Carabao Cup.

“In many ways (it was satisfying), yeah,” Toffees boss Dyche said. “I think the first thing is the performance level.

“Without really opening too much in the first half, I thought it was a very solid performance and we were asking questions.

“Second half, a little bit more freedom came into the play, particularly in the top third, which is what I spoke to them about at half-time and I’m pleased they delivered that.

“We scored three goals – on another day could have had maybe another couple – so overall pleasing.

“You know, a lot of noise about our start, but I think it showed we’ve still got a group that are alive here and some good players.”

Manchester United make decision after talks with Chelsea over Ben Chilwell transfer

Wednesday 28 August 2024 21:08 , Mike Jones

Manchester United are not acting on the availability of Ben Chilwell, despite Chelsea raising the prospect of a deal in ongoing talks between the two clubs.

Executives of both have been discussing whether they can resolve a number of squad issues with mutually beneficial deals, particularly the futures of Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho and Chilwell.

The left-back had been proposed by Chelsea due to United’s struggles in that area with Luke Shaw’s injury record, but the Old Trafford hierarchy have decided to press on with their own options. It is understood the figures involved in any prospective deal, as one factor, were way apart.

How will the draw work?

Wednesday 28 August 2024 21:00 , Mike Jones

To ensure there is no clash of fixture dates for the six English teams playing in the Champions League and Europa League, two bowls will be used. Bowl One will contain Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester United, which will be pre-drawn ahead of the evening fixtures - the six clubs will be spread across six ties, with the draw also deciding if they will be at home or away in the third round. This means that the sextet cannot meet one another at this stage.

The main draw will follow later. The first six teams out of Bowl Two will complete the first six ties, before the remaining ten are drawn from the remaining 20 teams.

The third round draw for the Carabao Cup will be conducted at about 10.15pm BST on Wednesday 28 August following the conclusion of Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle.

The draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup is set to be made as the remaining Premier League clubs enter the competition.

Those top flight sides involved in European competition this season join the 25 second-round winners for a draw that has been revamped this season.

This is due to the expansion of the Champions League and Europa League, which now have two extra matchweeks — to avoid these clashing with Carabao Cup rounds, the six Premier League sides involved in the top two tiers of European competition will be drawn separately from Chelsea and the 25 sides who progress from the second round.

It means that Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Tottenham cannot face each other in the third round.

Barcelona are interested in taking Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic on loan.

But they face competition from several other clubs for the 19-year-old, who Liverpool may allow to leave on a season-long deal.

However, Liverpool are adamant that fellow midfielder Tyler Morton, who was the subject of interest from German champions Bayer Leverkusen, will not be going out on loan.
