Bristol Rovers will not be signing Cardiff City midfielder Joel Colwill on loan this month, Bristol Live understands, with League One rivals Exeter City expected to take the 20-year-old on loan for the remainder of the campaign after an impressive first half of the season at Cheltenham Town.

Colwill has shone in League Two with the Robins in what has been his first loan spell away from Cardiff, scoring nine goals and providing three assists in 28 appearances across all competitions.

Bluebirds manager Omer Riza confirmed in a press conference earlier this week that Rovers were one of the clubs that had shown interest in taking the 20-year-old on loan for the remainder of the campaign amid reports that there were League One clubs interested in the young midfielder.

However, Riza also confirmed interest from Exeter which is expected to be the Welshman's imminent destination with a recall from Cheltenham set to be announced swiftly.

It is understood that new Rovers head coach Inigo Calderon wants players who can help their immediate situation which is ultimately surviving in League One with the Gas still just five points clear of the relegation zone.

This has been emphasised by the arrival of midfielder Romaine Sawyers who, at 33, has played in all four divisions of English football and boasts over 500 club appearances alongside just shy of 50 international caps for Saint Kitts and Nevis.

When asked for the latest regarding signings on Thursday, Calderon insisted that the Gas weren't desperate for additions, saying: "I know there’s a lot of things behind the scenes to try to make the team better and to improve them but at the same time I don’t think we have to rush anything. I’m happy with what we have. If we can bring someone that’s better to the table [it’s] welcome. If not, I don’t think we have to bring [in] players just for the fact of bringing them."
