Carlisle City topple Workington Reds to reach cup semi-finals
Carlisle City are the first team into the semi-finals of the Fred Conway Cumberland Cup - after knocking out holders Workington.
Dan Kirkup's side claimed a 3-1 victory over Mark Fell's Reds in Tuesday's quarter-final.
The Northern League Division One side led 2-0 at the break after goals from captain Josh Simpson and frontman Callum Birdsall.
Ruben Grewal pulled one back for Workington but Keiron Blair soon restored City's two-goal advantage in front of 245 fans at Gillford Park.
The result boosts City's hopes of getting their hands on the county senior cup, which they last won in 2022. In the previous round Kirkup's side knocked out a young Carlisle United XI.
For Workington, meanwhile, it is the second time they have been knocked out of the competition this season.
They were earlier defeated by Whitehaven AFC but were handed a reprieve after Whitehaven were expelled for fielding an ineligible player.
The three other quarter-finals are set to be played in the coming weeks.
This Saturday, Unisun Athletic take on Penrith, while Saturday, February 8 will see Wetheriggs United face Aspatria, and Keswick at home to Cleator Moor Celtic.
Next up for City in the league, meanwhile, is a home clash with North Shields on Saturday, while Reds go to Whitby Town in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.
