Carlisle United have sacked head coach Mike Williamson two days after being heavily beaten by Swindon Town in League Two.

Goals from Danny Butterworth, Joe Westley, Paul Glatzel, and two from Aaron Drinan meant Swindon made the long trip home from Carlisle full of glee and 14 points clear of the relegation zone.

By contrast, the defeat left Carlisle rock bottom of the EFL and having lost five of their last six games in the league.

Williamson only arrived at Brunton Park in September and managed his first game in charge at The Nigel Eady County Ground, when Carlisle won 2-0.

Despite having made 11 new signings during January to help them escape from the threat of relegation, the former Milton Keynes Dons boss will not be given the chance to dig them out of the hole that they are in.

A statement on the club website said: "Carlisle United Football Club can confirm that head coach Mike Williamson has this morning been relieved of his duties and has left the club with immediate effect.

"Everyone at the club would like to thank Mike for his efforts during his time at the club.

"The club will give a further update in the coming days."
