Mike Williamson says he will only move to replace Luke Armstrong if “the right person” comes along.

The Carlisle United striker could be on his way out of the Blues having been left out of Saturday’s squad amid transfer interest.

Head coach Williamson, though, said he would only seek a replacement striker if one becomes available that could reinforce those he has already signed.

Asked if he would look to move in the market should Armstrong complete a move away from Brunton Park, Williamson said: “The right one, yes, because we've brought in Ceds [Cedwyn Scott] and Joe [Hugill], two players that have got a lot of quality.

“They've got goals [in them], they’re technically very good, very calm in front of goal and have pace as well. So they're going to be playing a lot of minutes.

“If we get the right person who either can support them or come in and do even better than them, then obviously [we would look at that].

“But at the moment, we're happy with the business we've done.”

Armstrong has been linked with Scottish Premiership club Motherwell with the record signing’s days at United appearing to be numbered.

Williamson said a “mutual agreement” saw him omitted from the squad for the 1-0 defeat to Bradford City, with the striker expressing concern that an injury if he played could scupper his chances of a move.

The head coach faced questions regarding his attacking set-up on Saturday as Carlisle fell to defeat, with some fans urging him more often to play two frontmen together.

Asked about the calls for a clearer Plan B, Williamson said: “Well, the Plan B is [that we] moved two up top [in the second half] and we wanted to sustain attacks, but we haven't at the minute got a Georgie Kelly or a Charlie Wyke, somebody that we can use as a focal point.

“We still want to play the way [of] our identity, which is making the short pass, attract and then going over the top, so we're not just going up into bodies.

“We tried to manipulate the structure and go with two up top. But we couldn't get that control. We couldn't smooth the ball out enough.”

Asked if he may need to seek such a “focal point” in the market, with Kelly and Wyke both out injured, he said: “It’s got to be the right focal point.

“Losing Charlie early on, and then Georgie, is disappointing – I think they would definitely suit the way we play.

“But we've just got to make sure it is the right one. We brought in two fantastic number nines. I think we've got more than enough in the building.”

United have been linked with right-sided Birmingham City man Josh Williams, while fresh reports have also linked Carlisle with the Barnet wide man Idris Kanu.

Football League World, meanwhile, claim Fleetwood Town, Kilmarnock and Barrow are also interested in Armstrong.
