Carlisle United boss salutes Scott ahead of Magpies mission
Mike Williamson hopes the goals will continue to flow for Cedwyn Scott as he prepares to face his former club.
The Carlisle United striker, who scored his first for the Blues at Fleetwood Town on Saturday, will line up against Notts County tonight (Meadow Lane, 7.45pm).
Scott, who rejoined United from the Magpies earlier this month, is a much more mature player these days according to head coach Williamson.
And his penalty box instincts were on show when he poached the opener last time out.
“I hope he has many, many more because he was brilliant at Gateshead for us, and he's matured unbelievably,” said Williamson.
“It's one of the biggest differences I've seen in a player. Now he's like a wise head and he understands the detail.
“We know he's got the quality around the box to create something out of nothing, but he understands where to be.
“It's not luck being in the right place at the right time.”
Scott made 61 appearances and scored 17 goals for tonight’s opponents from 2022 to 2025, as well as the shoot-out penalty against Chesterfield in the 2023 National League play-off final that sealed the Magpies’ promotion back to the EFL.
The frontman came off in the second half at Fleetwood but Williamson said it was hopefully just cramp.
On Saturday, meanwhile, he became the first Blues player to score on his full debut since Alfie McCalmont against Colchester United in February 2023.
Another player set to face his former club tonight is midfielder Will Patching, who was on Notts’ books from 2018 to 2019, making ten appearances, while ex-Blues defender Rod McDonald is in the Magpies’ ranks.
Stuart Maynard’s County sit sixth in League Two and are in good form with five wins from their last seven games. Tonight is Carlisle’s first visit to Meadow Lane since a 1-1 draw in November 2018 when Jerry Yates scored for John Sheridan’s Blues.
Carlisle are seeking another result that can take a further chunk out of their five-point gap to safety.
“It’s obviously going to be a tough one,” Williamson told the News & Star.
“They’re a big club and have an identity in the way they want to play, but we've got to go there and use Saturday as a catalyst.
“We'll go with the same intentions in the way we want to play.
“I think we might have to concede a bit of possession, but we've got to make sure our possession detail and our distances are good.
“We showed [at Fleetwood that] we created a couple of chances off the back of those counter-attacks and I think when you have that pace and power, that gives you that threat.
“So there'll be no change in the way we want to play if we're able to control and dominate, which I think we will in spells, but if not, then we've got to be solid and we've got to be really, really hard to beat.
“We know we've got players that can score goals, so we can be dangerous on the counter-attack.”
Williamson will hope to have Stephen Wearne back from illness tonight, while Paul Dummett (hamstring) is being assessed. Terell Thomas could start if the latter is ruled out.
United’s boss, meanwhile, was encouraged by the substitute display of Sean Fusire on Saturday.
The Sheffield Wednesday loan midfielder endured a tough debut against Bradford City but bounced back with an excellent cross for Sam Lavelle’s winner at Fleetwood.
“He’s got a lot of quality, and he's come in after a bit of a layoff in terms of a bit of an illness, so he's getting up to speed,” said Williamson.
“He's a great lad around the place. [Saturday] just showed he's got quality in abundance and hopefully we can keep seeing more of that.”
The rivals in the division who Carlisle are trying to chase are also in action tonight, with third-bottom Tranmere at Swindon Town and fourth-bottom Newport County – also five points above United – at Salford City. Bottom side Morecambe, who are now a point behind Carlisle, go to Bradford City.
