Carlisle United fans join moving tribute to 15-year-old Georgy

It was a moment that put everything into perspective.

Fans of Carlisle United and Crewe Alexandra took part in a moving tribute to a 15-year-old boy who died recently.

The 15th-minute of the New Year's Day game at the Mornflake Stadium saw supporters of both clubs applaud in memory of Georgy Capener.

Georgy, from Wistaston near Crewe, passed away in December after a long and brave battle against a rare bone cancer.

He was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma in 2018.

The football-mad teenager's courageous fight touched the hearts of many, with his fight including a huge fundraising initiative to help with specialist treatment.

The tribute at Wednesday's game saw Carlisle fans respond to messages on social media by Crewe supporters, inviting everyone at the game to pay their respects to Georgy.

As fans in the 6,345 crowd applauded - including 924 Carlisle supporters - an image of Georgy appeared on the big screen.

A message alongside read: "Georgy - forever in our hearts."

Georgy's funeral will be held on Friday, January 10 with a service held at Crewe Alexandra.
