Carlisle United: "Plates spinning" for more transfer business
Mike Williamson says “plates are spinning” for more potential signings even though most of Carlisle United’s January business is done.
The head coach says Carlisle have options in mind should they need to replace players who may leave.
And he says United can still move “if the right man comes along” before the end of the transfer window.
Williamson has made ten signings this month in an attempt to revamp the squad to push for League Two survival.
He said the “nucleus” of his squad is now in place, but stressed that United’s owners, the Piatak family, will back him to make further additions if needed.
“I think that the nucleus of what we wanted to do has been done,” he said.
“But the message from the owners is ‘whatever it takes’.
“They're there to support us and back us and now it's just about making sure that whoever we do bring in really adds to the quality.
“We don't need bodies now – we've got more than enough – but we're always just looking to improve in every way we can.”
Williamson said it was difficult to say how many more players could yet join Carlisle this month.
It will be determined in part by outgoing business, he suggested.
“It’s hard to quantify because it just depends on other areas and plates spinning, and players wanting to leave at the minute,” he added.
“If the right man comes along of course there'll definitely be more business to be done.
“But we're at a good place and we feel like we've done good business, so our focus is on making sure that this group improves.”
Williamson told the News & Star that he did not “foresee” anything happening before the weekend.
But there are “ongoing” situations about some members of his current squad, with Jack Robinson weighing up options to move on and Luke Armstrong the subject of interest.
“We've got our targets if certain things drop, but at the moment we know we've got a healthy squad,” added Williamson.
“But if any bodies do leave the building then we'll be looking to respond very quickly.
“I'm not keen on losing Luke but he has expressed a desire to want to play regularly so if it does happen, we need a contingency plan.”
Williamson said there had been “one or two” enquiries about other members of his squad but nothing concrete.
And United are continuing to negotiate a new deal with Kadeem Harris, whose short-term contract is set to expire next week.
“Rob [Clarkson, sporting director] is speaking every day with the agent and fingers crossed,” said Williamson.
“We’re working on it as best we can. We really value him [Harris] but at the minute it's just about conversations.”
On what remained to be resolved, Williamson said the detail was between Harris and the club.
But he added: “Geographically, it's a bit away from his family.
“But I think his agent has actually said the words, ‘I'm surprised he's so eager to commit, because of his family’ – but he's loved it here.
“Of course the finances have to be right and I don't know what other options he has.”
