Carlisle United are facing an anxious wait over the injury that forced Paul Dummett out of action just minutes into his debut.

The defender went down with a hamstring injury in the opening stages and had to be substituted inside the first five minutes of the 2-1 win at Fleetwood Town.

Head coach Mike Williamson says he hopes it turns out to have been a precautionary measure.

But the experienced January signing will now be assessed to determine the extent of the problem.

Williamson said the severity of the injury was not yet known. “He [Dummett] said he felt his hamstring, and obviously he knows his own body, so it was bad enough that he had to come off,” said the Blues boss.

“We’re going to have to assess it. I really hope it’s just the case that he’s felt something and it’s more precaution, but we’ll have to wait and see.”

Dummett’s start to life at Carlisle has proved chequered, with the 33-year-old involved in a car accident last Friday, ruling him out of the following day’s 1-0 defeat to Bradford City.

The former Newcastle United man returned to training this week and went into the side for his first appearance at the Highbury Stadium in the middle of United’s central defensive three.

After his early injury, fit-again Terell Thomas came off the bench for his first appearance since November.

Williamson said the Saint Lucia international “typified” Carlisle’s resolute performance with his display at the back against Pete Wild’s side, as goals from Cedwyn Scott and Sam Lavelle earned United a crucial victory.

Dummett’s fellow January signing Stephen Wearne was out of the squad with illness, Williamson added, the Blues hoping the ex-MK Dons man will be able to return against Notts County on Tuesday night.

Ethan Robson, who also returned to the squad at Fleetwood after an injury lay-off, had also been suffering from illness in the build-up, as had Jordan Jones, Williamson added.
