Carlo Ancelotti famously forgot who I am - now I am looking to down Man City and Pep Guardiola
It is one of the most famous, albeit awkward, clips of football's Covid era. After Everton released their retained list, then Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti was asked about Luke Garbutt's departure from Goodison Park after 11 years at the club.
Ancelotti looked confused and asked: "Who?" When asked again, Ancelotti replied: "I'm sorry, I was not expecting this question. I don't know."
The clip instantly became a viral meme on social media and Garbutt, to his credit, saw the funny side as he tweeted: "It’s not his fault, it's the club's. However, it’s a belter though."

In Ancelotti's defence, Garbutt had not made a senior appearance for Everton in five years and was on loan at Ipswich that season. The Italian manager had only arrived on Merseyside in December and their paths won't have crossed.
Garbutt joined Everton from Leeds United as teenager in 2009 and represented England at all age groups up until under-21 level. He was handed a five-year deal in 2015 but after loan spells with Cheltenham, Colchester, Fulham, Wigan and Ipswich, he failed to break into the Toffees' first team on a consistent basis.
While Ancelotti went on to take over as Real Madrid manager in the summer of 2021 for a hugely successful trophy-laden second spell in charge at the Bernabeu, Garbutt has rebuilt his career in English football's lower leagues. He joined Blackpool on a free transfer and spent three seasons at Bloomfield Road before moving to Salford City last summer.
Now 31, he has established himself as an important part of the Ammies' backline under the management of Karl Robinson. And now Garbutt will be looking to keep out Pep Guardiola's Man City side on Saturday as he lines up for Salford in the FA Cup third round at the Etihad Stadium.
In front of the BBC cameras, he will hope to send a reminder of why Everton felt he had so much potential as a youngster. If Salford pull off one of the biggest FA Cup upsets in history, Ancelotti may finally realise who he is as well.
