Carragher thinks it is inevitable that Mourinho will be sacked

Jamie Carragher thinks Jose Mourinho faces the sack if he is not able to turn around Manchester United’s poor form.

United won against Leicester City on the opening day of the season, but delivered a woeful performance against Brighton in an embarrassing 3-2 display.

Manchester City and Liverpool have both won their opening two games of the season, and with rumours of a disagreement between his captain Paul Pogba and no central defender signed as requested, it is perhaps no surprise he is favourite for the sack at some bookmakers.

Carragher said of Mourinho, “Not just because of yesterday and not a big knee-jerk reaction as Man United lost a game away from home, but what’s happened in the summer, if performances like that continue, I don’t think Jose Mourinho will be manager of Man United next season.

“He may not be manager of them at some point this season. But I think there will be coaches up and down the country looking at Mourinho at what he said in the summer about bringing players in, a centre-back.

“He’s spent £30million on two of them, and he had two England internationals in [Phil] Jones and [Chris] Smalling. They might be saying ‘coach them, make them better’. But for almost every coach I would say yeah, that would be right. But not Mourinho.

“And I’ll tell you why. Mourinho’s a manager for today, not tomorrow. Ed Woodward brought him in and he knew that because Manchester United messed up with two appointments before hand.

“So the Man United traditions have gone out the window. When you get Mourinho, it’s all about winning right now. That’s why he’s bought Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], [Alexis] Sanchez, [Nemanja] Matic. That’s why he’s gone for centre-halves aged 29, 30.”

Carragher did not lay the blame solely on the manager, but pointed out that a shift in transfer policy away from established players undermined the reason for appointing him in the first place:

“Now, you can’t just pull the plug on him and go the Man United way again of buying younger players. You’ve got the wrong manager. If you’re going to do that, you might as well get rid of him.”
