Catalans Dragons release overseas player after short-term stay in Super League
Catalans Dragons have released dual-code rugby player Ben Lam following a trial period with the club. The Perpignan-based outfit signed the 33-year-old back in August, with the player aiming to secure a Super League contract with the side.
However, Lam, who had spent his entire senior career in rugby union, failed to make a first-team appearance for Catalans, instead playing for their feeder team in the French Elite Championship, playing five times.
Before that, the New Zealander, born in Auckland, featured over 170 times in union, playing for the likes of Blues, Auckland, Hurricanes, Wellington, Bordeaux Begles, and Montpellier. He represented Samoa on the international stage and NZ in the 7s format of the code.

Meanwhile, Catalans have now confirmed that he won't sign a new deal for 2025 with his trial contract ending this month. Posting a club statement, the club outlined their position. They wrote: "It was considered that, despite his efforts, it would be difficult for him to obtain game time in the positions in which he has experience.
"He has been a positive influence on those young players around him, encouraging others and showing great humility at training and in games. The club would like to thank him for his dedication and professionalism since his arrival and wish him all the best for the future."
Catalans have signed three new quota players for 2025, with Tevita Pangai-Junior, Luke Keary, and Nick Cotric joining the club. They finished in seventh place in Super League last season.
