Celtic could consign Bayern Munich to unwanted European history tonight if Brendan Rodgers masterminds a monumental upset.

The German heavyweights return to Parkhead for the first time since 2017 tonight when they take on the Hoops in the Champions League knockout playoff first leg. But Vincent Kompany's superstars could end the night in the history books for the wrong reasons - if they fall to defeat in Glasgow.

Bayern finished the revamped league phase in 12th spot with 15 points - three more than Celtic - after five wins from eight. Yet while they boast a flawless home record - including a 9-2 dismantling of Dinamo Zagreb on matchday one - their form on the road has left much to be desired.

The Bundesliga leaders crashed to three European away defeats at Aston Villa, Barcelona and Feyenoord, with their only victory outside of Germany coming against Shakhtar Donetsk. And should they tumble to another loss at Celtic Park, it would be the first time Die Roten have lost four away games in a European campaign (BBC Stats).

However, Celtic would have to make history themselves by beating the six-time European winners at the fifth attempt. The Scottish champions have yet to overcome Munich in four previous encounters, losing 2-1 in Germany and drawing 0-0 at Parkhead in 2003 before shipping three goals without reply at the Allianz in the 2017/18 campaign and falling to a 2-1 defeat in Glasgow.

The Hoops would also have to banish a seven-year hoodoo by earning their first knockout win in Europe since beating Zenit St Petersburg 1-0 at Parkhead in 2018 - although the Russians overturned the result with a 3-0 victory in the Europa League last 32 return tie.
