Celtic to Munich flight prices skyrocket to more than £500 as away allocation sparks a Champions League ticket scramble

Celtic waited 12 years to make it to the Champions League knockout stages - but it will cost away fans more than a pretty penny.

Brendan Rodgers' men will have jumped up in their seats when they found out Bayern Munich would be their glamorous play-off opponents. Furthermore, travelling Hoops supporters had plenty to shout about after UEFA gave them a reprieve following the flare debacle at Villa Park on matchday eight. An allocation of around 3,750 has been given with away tickets prices capped at £50 in the Champions League. Home end tickets are available on Bayern's website for £100.

But being a modern football fan is an expensive lifestyle, and that proves no different when travelling away for big European nights. Flight costs around the second leg in Munich on Tuesday, February 18 have rocketed - some to over £500.

EasyJet, one of the go-to airlines for cheap flights, does not sell flights between the two cities. Instead they run from Edinburgh Airport to Munich International Airport - with a whopping £542 price tag slapped on a return flight when travelling the day before and after the game. Not only that but these EasyJet flights are few and far between, meaning fans will have to fly on Sunday, February 16 and return a WEEK later on Sunday, February 23.

The main options involve flights from Glasgow to another city in Germany first, mainly Frankfurt, which then takes an hour's flight time to reach Munich. German airliner Lufthansa's cheapest options for fans is still a minimal £316.86, as of Friday, which includes stop overs in Frankfurt both ways on both February 17 and 19. Lufthansa has, however, added extra flights to - on Tuesday, February 18 departing Glasgow at 12 noon and arriving at 3.10pm - and from Munich - Wednesday, February 19 departing at 6.30am and arriving 7.55am.

Many will seek refuge with flight comparison site Skyscanner but even their prices have mostly doubled. The cheapest flight on offer for the same dates is £244 - but that includes THREE stops en route in Malaga, Porto and Madrid. The website shows the average prices on the same days the following the week are at a much reduced rate, ranging from a much cheaper £132.
