Europa League draw LIVE! West Ham and Liverpool to learn quarter-final opponents

Europa League draw LIVE!

Liverpool and West Ham are set to discover their quarter-final opponents and possible semi-final fate as the final English teams left in Europe’s second-tier competition. Both reached the last eight in style on Thursday, the Reds finishing the job against Sparta Prague to winning 11-2 on aggregate, while the Hammers thumped Germany side Freiburg 5-0 to overturn a 1-0 defeat in the first leg.

Brighton and Scottish side Rangers, though, were knocked out. Brighton failed to overturn a 4-0 first-leg defeat to Roma while Rangers lost at home to Benfica after a thrilling 2-2 draw in Portugal last week for another frustrating exit in Europe.

Liverpool are the clear favourites to win the tournament and give Jurgen Klopp a going away present, but Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen will have other ideas. AC Milan, Atalanta and Marseille also made it through. Follow all the action LIVE with Standard Sport’s dedicated blog for the draw from 12pm!

Here’s that famous theme music.

Hamann: Man City and Real Madrid are ‘a cut above’

10:54 , Alex Young

Arsenal may be second-favourites, but Didi Hamann has other ideas.

“If you want to win it, you have to beat City, it’s obviously easier to beat them in a one-off game rather than over two legs,” he told BoyleSports.

“Over two legs I can only see Real Madrid beating them. I don’t see anyone beating them over two legs. City and Real Madrid are a cut above the rest of the other 14 teams.

"If you avoid City and Real Madrid, and be in the other half, then everyone has a chance. And City over one leg are beatable, I think Inter probably could or should have beat them last year, but City are the favourites and rightly so.”

All eyes on these two...

Who could Arsenal face in the Champions League quarter-finals?

09:40 , Jonathan Gorrie

Arsenal are in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in 14 years, and are likely to face a daunting test.

The Gunners made hard work of their last-16 tie against Porto, losing the first leg 1-0 before taking the second leg to a penalty shootout as heroics from goalkeeper David Raya sealed a last-eight spot.

This is Arsenal's first season in the Champions League in seven years, and if they are to make the most of it they must start beating the continent's best.

All rules go out the window in the quarter-final stage onwards, meaning Arsenal could face the other remaining Premier League team left in Manchester City - who are the current holders.
