Champions League draw as it happened: Man City face Real Madrid again as Celtic get Bayern Munich play-off tie

Champions League draw as it happened: Man City face Real Madrid again as Celtic get Bayern Munich play-off tie

The draw for the Champions League knockout phase play-offs took centre stage at Uefa headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday. The teams that finished ninth to 24th in the inaugural league phase of the revamped competition were those involved in proceedings this morning. Sides that placed ninth to 16th are seeded for the draw, with the rest unseeded as the bracket begins.

The pairings of those final league positions meant that clubs already knew which two opponents they could face in the play-offs. So Manchester City’s reward for beating Club Brugge 3-1 at home on Wednesday night is a blockbuster two-legged tie against Real Madrid. The European giants will now meet in the Champions League for a fourth successive season and this latest showdown promises much.

As a result, Celtic have been paired with Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund are among the other heavyweights involved at this stage of the competition that discovered their fates with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Barcelona and Aston Villa all waiting to see who joins them in the last 16.

Real Madrid are in the draw this morning, though they can only be paired with Manchester City or Celtic.

Courtois: Real Madrid are 'not afraid of anyone'

10:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Whilst Carlo Ancelotti may not fancy a play-off tie against Manchester City, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois insists Real Madrid fear no team.

"I've said it before, we didn't miss out on the top eight today, but in other games," he told Movistar.

"We'll have to play the play-off, and see who we play against. It's our job to be ready, and wait. But we're not afraid of anyone.

"It is what it is. We played them in knockout games last year, two years ago, and three years ago. If we have to play City, if you want to win the Champions League, you have to beat the best."

Pep Guardiola in a bullish mood

10:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says a potential tie against Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the Champions League play-off round will be a challenge.

However, it is one his team will look forward to.

“I don’t know if they are happy to play us, but it is what it is," he said after Man City's 3-1 win over Club Brugge."No complaints at all. Bayern or Madrid - one is the king of the competition; the other is the second or third king of the competition.

“The experience of the second leg there. What I want since the beginning of the season is to have the team back."

Housekeeping...

There are no restrictions in place for the play-off draw.

This means we could get an all Serie A clash between AC Milan vs Juventus.

Though, those who remember the 2003 Champions League final may hope that’s not the case...

Carlo Ancelotti: Real Madrid don't like playing Man City

09:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Champions League holders Real Madrid could be paired with Manchester City in the play-off round.

This would mark the fourth year in a row in which the two sides have met on the European stage, but it's not a potential clash that Carlo Ancelotti is particularly relishing.

"City are more likely to win the Champions League, that's the reality," he said.

"We don't like playing against City, but if we have to play City, we'll do it, as we have in previous years."

The first legs will be played on either Tuesday February 11 or Wednesday February 12, with the reverse fixtures taking place a week later.

How does the Champions League play-off draw work?

09:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

While the teams that finished in the top eight in the league phase have gone straight through to the last 16, those between ninth and 24th in the table face an extra play-off round.

Teams between ninth and 16th will be seeded and play their second leg at home, against the sides who finished the league phase in 17th to 24th.

There is also a pairing system in place. That means the ninth and 10th-placed teams will take on either the team that finished 23rd or 24th, with 11th and 12th up against the 21st or 22nd-placed side, and so on.

Which teams are in the draw?
