Manchester City have just one more league phase fixture left to play in the Champions League before their fate is decided.

City will take on Club Brugge on Wednesday evening at the Etihad Stadium and have just one task ahead of them to reach the next round. City are currently in 25th place in the league phase standings, and must finish in the top 24 to reach the play-off round, which takes place next month.

Pep Guardiola's side lost 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain in their last fixture in the competition. Not only did that defeat put pressure on the result of the clash against Brugge, but also end their chances of climbing into the top eight and qualifying for the last-16.

City know that they must beat Brugge in order to qualify for the next round of the Champions League. A draw or a defeat would see their European campaign come to an early end.

Historically, teams that finish third in their Champions League group would then drop to the Europa League for the knockout stages. However, due to the changes made to the European competitions by UEFA for this season, that is no longer the case.

As a result, City finishing 25th or lower would see them eliminated from Europe altogether and they would not join Manchester United in the Europa League. Teams that finish between ninth and 24th will enter the play-off round to battle for a place in the last-16, which remains City's only chance of continuing their Champions League journey this season.

Should City qualify for the next round, the play-offs are scheduled to take place across two legs in February. The last-16 will begin in March, ahead of the quarter-finals a month later in April.
