It’s crunch time in the Championship, and after Cardiff City were finally dislodged from second spot by Fulham on Tuesday night things are heating up nicely.

With the small matter of a quarter-of-a-billion pound jackpot on offer, the Premier League bounty is getting so close the clubs at the top can almost taste it.

Up into second: Fulham beat Reading on Tuesday night to heap the pressure of Cardiff City
Up into second: Fulham beat Reading on Tuesday night to heap the pressure of Cardiff City

Fulham: 2nd

Remaining fixtures: Brentford (H) Millwall (A) Sunderland (H) Birmingham (A)

Maximum points: 12. Probable points: 9

Can they do it? Yes. Derby games to come, but 20 unbeaten speaks volumes. Sunderland could be down by the time they meet, and Birmingham could be safe on the final day.

Cardiff City: 3rd

Remaining fixtures: Norwich (A) Nottingham Forest (H) Derby (A) Hull City (A) Reading (H)

Maximum points: 15. Probable points: 9

Can they do it? It’s not cut and dried now. It was a matter of days ago they were eight points ahead of Fulham but the wheels have come off. Saturday at Norwich is now critical.

Aston Villa: 4th

Remaining fixtures: Leeds United (H) Ipswich Town (A) Derby (H) Millwall (A)

Maximum points: 12. Probable points: 10

Can they do it? Top two, no – but Villa are perhaps the only club who will be able to conserve energy ahead of the play-offs.

Derby County: 5th

Remaining fixtures: Wolves (A) Burton (A) Middlesbrough (H) Cardiff City (H) Aston Villa (A) Barnsley (H)

Maximum points: 18 Probable points: 10

Can they do it? The best manager they have had for many years and for once the underdog. Can’t rule them out for the play-offs.

Millwall: 6th

Remaining fixtures: Sheffield United (A) Fulham (H) Middlesbrough (A) Aston Villa (H)

Maximum points: 12. Probable points: 7

Can they do it? A run-in littered with promotion rivals. Danger is that if they do make the play-offs, they’ll be spent. But what a season.

Middlesbrough: 7th

Remaining fixtures: Bristol City (H) Derby County (A) Millwall (H) Ipswich Town (A)

Maximum points: 12. Probable points: 9

Can they do it? Possibly. Last night at Sheffield United was a big set-back and they now have three rivals to come.

Bristol City: 8th

Remaining fixtures: Middlesbrough (A) Hull City (H) Nottingham Forest (A) Sheffield United (H)

Maximum points: 12. Probable points: 7

Can they do it? It’s very tricky now. Can’t lose at Boro on Saturday. If they do, it’s surely all over for the overachieving Robins.

Sheffield United: 9th

Remaining fixtures: Millwall (H) Bristol City (A) Preston NE (H) Bristol City (A)

Maximum points: 12. Probable points: 9

Can they do it? With a cluster of clubs above them, they’ll probably need 10 points minimum. A tall order.

Brentford: 10th

Remaining fixtures: Fulham (A) QPR (H) Barnsley (A) Hull City (H)

Maximum points: 12 Probable points: 7

Can they do it? No. A four point gap with four games to go is too big. Will need a six point return from the two up-coming west London derby games to stand any chance.
