Leeds United's Championship promotion rivals Burnley recorded a vital win in their charge for a top-two finish as they scraped past Cardiff City on Tuesday night. Scott Parker's side ran out 2-1 winners at the Cardiff City Stadium to move to within two points of second-place Sheffield United and five of leaders Leeds.

Burnley, looking to bounce back following the shock 3-0 defeat to Preston North End in the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon made a bright start in South Wales and they took the lead inside the first 19 minutes. A neat move was finished off by Josh Brownhill, who volleyed home at the near post after Hannibal Mejbri's cross.

The Clarets continued to push and they doubled their advantage right before half-time. Ex-Leeds loanee Jaiden Anthony whipped a delightful ball into the box which was headed across the six-yard area by Zian Flemming for Maxime Esteve, unmarked in acres of space, to prod home from close-range.

It was looking comfortable for Parker's side, who hadn't conceded a single league goal in 2025 heading into their trip to Cardiff but that incredible record was breached in the 42nd minute.

Cardiff pulled one goal back as Yousef Salech pounced on a defensive mix-up to head the ball into the top corner beyond James Trafford. The Clarets had not conceded in 12 straight games beforehand.

Although Cardiff came close to levelling in the second half through Salech, yet again, Burnley managed the game well and held out to win 2-1 and close the gap on the Championship top-two.

Burnley now sit two behind Sheffield United and five adrift of Leeds with just 11 matches to play. The Clarets were last defeated in the Championship when they lost 1-0 at Millwall in November.

Elsewhere in the second tier, there was a gigantic 2-0 win for Hull City over relegation rivals Plymouth Argyle. The Tigers are now five points clear of the drop zone.

Preston and Swansea City played out a goalless draw, while Bristol City moved up to seventh and on the brink of the play-off places with a 2-0 success at Millwall.
