Charly Alcaraz makes instant impact at Everton training as Sean Dyche nemesis returns to Finch Farm

Carlos Alcaraz has gone straight into work with his new teammates after moving halfway around the world to join Everton. The 22-year-old, whose deadline day signing needed to be completed after the transfer window formally closed on Monday night, will provide a welcome boost to David Moyes as the Blues boss attempts to deal with an extensive injury list.

Signed from Flamengo in Brazil, the attacking midfielder will offer versatility across the front line, a valuable asset given that forward players Dwight McNeil, Youssef Chermiti, Armando Broja and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all face extended periods on the sidelines.

Midfielder Orel Mangala, who was on loan from Lyon, has also been ruled out for the season after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage in the win at Brighton and Hove Albion.

The latest gallery of training images to be released by Everton show the first team, joined by the likes of Under-21s players like Isaac Heath, in action at Finch Farm on Wednesday.

They show Alcaraz attempting to fit straight into his new side as the Argentine returns to the Premier League two years after he joined Southampton from Racing Club.

Stints with Juventus and Flamengo have since followed but he could become part of the Blues squad that moves into the club’s new stadium next season should Everton play him enough times over the coming months - the loan deal includes an obligation for it to be made permanent should he start a certain number of games.

Alcaraz’s first training session is notable for other reasons beyond his introduction to his teammates. While none of the injured players - including club captain Seamus Coleman - are pictured there is the return of an item that was banned by former manager Sean Dyche. Alcaraz is one of several players, a group that includes Jordan Pickford, Vitalii Mykolenko, Jesper Lindstrom, Jack Harrison and Jake O’Brien who are captured wearing snoods while they train. A number are also wearing white socks - another dislike of Moyes' predecessor, who enforced a 'train how you play' mantra. Both have been visible since Moyes' return but the cold weather on Wednesday made their use far more prevalent.

Dyche railed against such comforts, banning them upon his appointment in January 2023, explaining at the time: “Unless I’ve been out of the game for too long, you’re not allowed to wear hats when you play on a Saturday, you’re not allowed to wear snoods when you play on a Saturday and you have to, by the rules, wear shin pads.”
