Everton’s efforts to provide David Moyes with a first signing since his return to the Blues are progressing with Carlos Alcaraz understood to be undergoing a medical today.

The attacking midfielder is poised to join the Blues for the rest of the season. The 22-year-old would bolster the club’s options going forward and add depth to a squad that has been hit with a string of serious injuries.

The deal is expected to be a loan move that will include an obligation to make it permanent should certain performance criteria be met, at least according to his club Flamengo, which issued a statement on Friday to state that terms had been agreed for Alcaraz to move to Merseyside.

The player, whose career has already taken him to Europe with stints in the Premier League and Championship with Southampton and in Italy with Juventus, also posted a farewell message to the Rio de Janeiro club before the weekend.

Following the win over Leicester City on Saturday, Moyes said he was not aware that a deal had been officially concluded but added: “I’m hearing that there are ongoing conversations at the moment. I don’t think there is anything confirmed or definite. I might find out some more later today.”

Everton would still be keen to bring in further players should Alcaraz’s move be confirmed. While a run of three consecutive wins has opened a nine point gap to the bottom three, survival remains a priority and Moyes is eager to strengthen a squad currently dealing with the absences of Dwight McNeil, Youssef Chermiti, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Orel Mangala, Armando Broja and Seamus Coleman.

The club is not currently thought to be pursuing Rennes left back Adrien Truffert, one of many players linked with the Blues as Monday’s transfer deadline approaches. While there are long term ambitions to provide cover and competition in that area, the belief is that unless the market offers an opportunity deemed too good to miss out on, the priority is to seek out targets further up the pitch.
