Chelsea ace breaks silence after completing surprise transfer as next steps now clear
Gabriel Slonina has sent a heartfelt message to Barnsley after his loan move was terminated after just six months. The Chelsea goalkeeper will instead return to Cobham, where decisions over his future will be made.
After spending last season away at Belgian outfit KAS Eupen, Slonina was granted a first chance to play regular men's football in England when Barnsley completed a temporary move in early August. The 20-year-old goalkeeper would only go on to play 14 times across all competitions, though, with 11 coming in League One.
Slonina lost his place in late October before an injury saw him miss the final two months of his loan. He did have a standout moment, helping to secure an EFL Cup win with two crucial saves in a penalty shootout.

Since joining Chelsea it has been tough going for Slonina, and this next setback has not come at a good time. Next summer, Chelsea will add teenage shot-stopper Mike Penders to their squad, adding further competition for Slonina to fight against.
He could find himself heading back out on another loan if Chelsea seek to continue his development outside of youth football. In 2022/23 he was part of the Under-21 squad.
Slonina holds no grudges with his time at Barnsley, regardless, and issued a classy statement upon his exit. "Barnsley fans it comes to an end," he started in a message shared on social media.
"It wasn't the way I would've liked the first half of the season to go, but I thank you for welcoming me into the team and allowing me to be a little part of what I believe will be a successful season for you all. Thanks to the entire staff and squad of players for making me feel part of this club.
"Being in and out of the environment I know how hard everyone's working behind the scenes to make sure performances are up to the expected standard. I wish you all the best in the future, always will have a special part in my heart for YOU REDSS [burning heart emoji] And of course enjoy the big win this afternoon".
Slonina then showed his determination get back quickly, uploading an image to Instagram from the gym. He will be keen to get things on track once more throughout the rest of the January window.
