Chelsea academy star Jimmy-Jay Morgan endured an unsurprising welcome to the EFL after joining Gillingham on loan earlier this week. The 19-year-old went straight into the starting XI for the League Two clash against Tranmere Rovers and after a bright display, was taken off after 73 minutes.

Prior to his loan switch, Morgan had scored six goals from 10 Premier League 2 appearances with the young Blues sitting fifth in the table. While he was unable to contribute in front of goal on his maiden appearance, the teenager was heavily involved in the clash with three shots taken, one of which was on target.

After the 1-1 draw against Tranmere, the Gillingham boss John Coleman was full of praise for his performance. "I thought that young Jimmy [Jay Morgan] had a good debut. He shows that he's a Gillingham-type player," he said as quoted by the club's website.

"He's got heart, wants to work and wants to run. I think that the fans will love him. I cannot wait for the home fans to see him play.

"I thought that he was very bright and showed a lot of heart. I think that people were expecting him to be a bit of a pushover, but he was feisty and put himself about. I think that he will be a really good signing for us." As Coleman states, Morgan certainly did get involved as he committed three fouls.

He was also on the receiving end of a fair few harsh challenges which saw him fouled on four occasions with one of those leaving a particularly clear mark, as he revealed on Instagram. "Nice warm welcome to league football [laughing face emoji]," he wrote. A good point on the road. Fans you were brilliant [blue and white heart emoji]."

Judging by the words of his manager, Morgan will have likely enjoyed his debut and is therefore keen to play again. For any Chelsea fans interested in seeing how he gets on, the Gills are back in action away at Grimsby Town this coming Tuesday in the hopes of ending a run of six games without victory.
