Enzo Maresca declared himself “very happy” with his Chelsea bad boys, despite the fact the club will be fined for a second time this season for ill-discipline and Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana will serve one-match bans.

Nicolas Jackson may escape being retrospectively punished for striking Nottingham Forest substitute Morato, having been cleared by VAR, but both clubs could land Football Association charges for failing to control their players in a chaotic late bust-up.

The FA will review referee Chris Kavanagh’s report before deciding whether to take action, although VAR checked Jackson’s swipe at Morato during the game and deemed that it was not violent conduct.

Chelsea at least finished the game with all 11 men on the pitch, unlike Forest, who saw James Ward-Prowse sent-off for collecting two cynical yellow cards – the second of which was for handball when Jackson threatened to race clear.

But Chelsea’s frustration at not being able to overcome 10 men, after Noni Madueke had cancelled out Chris Wood’s opening goal, boiled over and the club will face the consequences.

Chelsea’s young team have the worst disciplinary record in the Premier League and will be fined £50,000 for collecting six bookings against Forest, having already paid out £25,000 after eight players and a staff member were yellow-carded in the victory over Bournemouth.

‘I’m not going to pay fine!’

Asked about the latest fine and the possibility of a third if Chelsea are charged by the FA with failing to control their players, Chelsea head coach Maresca said: “I am not going to pay it!

“It’s something we need to improve, but, overall, I like the team, the way they are fighting. I like the way they are becoming a team in these kinds of things. I don’t see any problems with that.”

On the fact that defenders Cucurella and Fofana will now miss the trip to Liverpool after the international break, Maresca added: “I know. But now we have the international break, time to see how we can organise. The good news is they are all ready.”

Chelsea are the only Premier League club to have any players reach five yellow cards, in just seven games, which results in an automatic one-match suspension.

Goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, who made a couple of stunning late saves, was a little less sympathetic towards Cucurella and Fofana than Maresca, as he said: “Massive players, but it was unlucky. They need to stop talking to the officials. We have some very good players to come in.”

Maresca was at the heart of the late bust-up that was sparked when Forest substitute Neco Williams pushed Cucurella into the Italian to send him flying to the ground. Chelsea’s players and substitutes reacted angrily, with Levi Colwill receiving a yellow card for his part in it.

“Fortunately I was in my [technical] area, so I was where I had to be,” said Maresca. “These things can happen. In terms of emotion, the team is fighting all together and I don’t think some of them lose their heads. They were, all of them, in the game. I was happy with that. I am OK, thank you.”

On Jackson getting involved from the substitutes’ bench, Maresca added: “In that moment, I think not only Nicolas was inside the pitch. If you look, more players from the bench were inside the pitch. If you ask me if I prefer when something like that happens, players from outside involved or not, I like the spirit of the team. I like the spirit of our team. I don’t see any problem.

“Someone tried to kick me there. When I fell down, I was there like this, and someone arrived. For sure, there are things that we can control and do better, for sure no doubt, and probably this is one of the things. But if you ask me about the team spirit, the way they are fighting together, the way they are doing things together, I’m very happy.”

Madueke appeared to get hurt in the late melee, while Colwill was also forced off near the end, but Maresca was hopeful the duo had not suffered significant injuries and will be able to report for duty with England.

Morgan Gibbs-White was forced off with an injury for Forest, which prompted head coach Nuno Espirito Santo to be booked for his resulting protests.

“I cannot judge the yellow card for James Ward-Prowse,” said Nuno. “He did it for the team. It was one-versus-one.

“What I am trying to say is please referees understand that we that are there on the touchline and on the pitch, it is very emotional. There are so many things happening, so many thoughts, so many circumstances. I must apologise for my behaviour, but I didn’t do anything that another manager wouldn’t. I must analyse each one [yellow card] for a proper judgment.”

On the bust-up, Nuno added: “I was there also. I went there to try to calm it down. It is very hard for the players to control their emotions. Very hard for us as managers to do that. So many responsibilities. We need the referees to understand.”
