Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca hits out at controversial red card decision in explosive VAR rant
Enzo Maresca has lamented the decision of referee Rob Jones not to send off Bournemouth forward David Brooks in Chelsea's 2-2 draw on Tuesday night. The forward was involved twice with Marc Cucurella during the match, but remained on the field for the entirety of an entertaining clash.
Jones, who was sent to the pitch-side monitor at Stamford Bridge, became the first official this season not to change his decision when referred by VAR for a review. Instead, Jones issued just a yellow card to Brooks, who appeared to take a swipe at Cucurella in an off-the-ball incident.
Once Jones was sent to the screen it was expected that Bournemouth would be reduced down to 10 men for the remainder of the night as it has become standard for referees to follow the guidance of their Stockley Park-based colleagues. On this occasion, Jones watched the collision as recommended by Graham Scott and Sian Massey-Ellis but did not dish out the full punishment.

Explaining that process online, the Premier League's match centre account wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "VAR recommended an on-field review for a possible red card to Brooks for violent conduct. Upon review, the referee deemed that the challenge on Cucurella was a reckless action and not violent conduct - and issued a yellow card to Brooks."
Maresca, though, took a different view. Speaking after the game he let his anger show. "I've said many times, for me, when there is no intention to take the ball, it's a red," said the Italian.
"They have to explain. If they give a yellow, that means something has happened. How can they judge that it was not dangerous? You cannot judge that's not dangerous.
"The intention is just to go against Marc Cucurella. In my opinion, it's a red. Hopefully, we can be more lucky with the referee in the future."
Brooks and Cucurella had already come together earlier in the match when the Chelsea defender looked to block his opponent off in the build-up to Nicolas Jackson's opening goal. The Bournemouth player responded by cutting Cucurella up in the second half as Robert Sanchez looked to launch a counter-attack.
Cucurella found himself on the floor when running into space, hit by Brooks' outstretched arm. Chelsea left their reaction to the game late as Reece James equalised in the 95th minute from a free-kick.
