The January transfer window closed on Monday night, much to the joy of Enzo Maresca. For Chelsea, their winter business is still not done, though.

After a quiet month practically - only two first-team additions were made and one was the recall of Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Crystal Palace - the head coach was only too happy to see the back of his second window in charge. Halfway through January he described matters as a 'disaster.'

The state of flux throughout his squad - which included potential exits for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Christopher Nkunku, both who went on to stay - made things complicated. The toll appeared to be paid as well with Chelsea's results dropping off markedly since Christmas.

And despite just the one new signing, Mathis Amougou joined from St Etienne on deadline day, there was a lot of noise and conversations regardless. Alejandro Garnacho and Mathys Tel were pursued, a few midfield options were considered, and strikers were always a focus of attention.

Those who did depart have had peripheral roles at best. Carney Chukwuemeka and Ben Chilwell have been stranded on the side-lines while Axel Disasi and, in particular, Joao Felix leaving are acceptances of mistakes made in the market by the sporting structure.

That doesn't mean that things are quite done there. After spending much of the window contemplating the loan situation, mainly the make-up of the international spots and the knock-on effects of returning players on possible new signings, one place has been left open.

David Datro Fofana coming in, as well as Aaron Anselmino, with Caleb Wiley relocated from RC Strasbourg to Watford, and only Felix and Chukwuemeka going out, has left room in the international loan department. That is expected to be filled sooner rather than later.

Although there were plans to see Anselmino join Marseille and Disasi himself was of interest to Milan, it is being kept for the lesser spotted Deivid Washington. Nine months on from his last senior appearance for the club, the 19-year-old is set to rejoin Santos.

Having arrived for over £17million in 2023 as a highly-rated striker in Brazil, Washington has hardly flourished. In the academy, he has been outperformed by homegrown talents such as Donnell McNeilly, Jimmy-Jay Morgan, and this season Shumaira Mkeuka.

The latter has made his debut for the senior squad and is regularly involved in training under Maresca despite only turning 17 shortly before Christmas. He is part of a crop of Cobham hopefuls really stating their case in Under-21 football.

Washington, meanwhile, has never truly settled in. He was given an elevated chance to impress under Mauricio Pochettino last year but hasn't been able to kick on. He will turn 20 over the summer and is now at a crossroads in his professional career.

Currently playing at the South American Under-20 Championship, for his country, Washington is lined up to move back to Santos once the tournament finishes. He has played five games so far, scoring twice with both coming in a win over Ecuador.

Although a deal has not yet been completed, the Brazilian transfer window is still open and it will remain so until February 28. That gives Chelsea 23 days (at the time of writing), or just over three weeks to have things signed and sealed. Washington will then join up with Neymar back in his home country.

If Chelsea are to get anything close to a return on the outlay they spent on Washington then they will be in need of a productive spell. He only has 10 senior starts to his name so far and just the two goals.

Compared that to teenage sensation Estevao Willian, who is still playing in Serie A with Palmeiras before making the move to England over the summer, and it is night and day. Estevao finished last season as the second-highest scorer, with 13, adding nine assists. At 17, he has even surpassed Neymar's output at the same age.

Washington has a long way to go to rebuild his status. Chelsea will be hopeful that he can find some form before the transfer and then continue that on back at Santos, otherwise they are staring at a serious loss.
