Chelsea hands Liverpool yet another Premier League title boost with huge gap on show
Enzo Maresca's Chelsea side dropped points for a third consecutive Premier League fixture on Monday, losing 2-0 on the road to 18th-place Ipswich Town. The result drops the Blues to fourth in the table and 10 points behind Liverpool (who also own a game in hand).
Maresca opted for some major changes to his starting XI against Ipswich, dropping Nicolas Jackson, Pedro Neto, Jadon Sancho, and Robert Sanchez in favor of Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix, Noni Madueke, and Filip Jorgensen.
Jorgensen, making his second career Premier League start in goal after earning a €24.5 million ($25.5 million) move from Villarreal this summer, conceded a 12th-minute penalty to Liam Delap and 53rd-minute strike to former Chelsea youngster Omari Hutchinson.

Hutchinson, an Arsenal academy player, joined Chelsea in 2022 in a surprising cross-London switch. He would feature only once for the Blues: as a substitute against Manchester City in January of 2023.
He joined Ipsiwch on loan in the summer of 2023 and helped the Tractor Boys gain promotion to the Premier League for the first time since 2002 with 10 goals and four assists.
Hutchinson joined on a permanent in the summer for €23.5 million ($24.5 million) and has started each League fixture for manager Kieren McKenna's side.
Liam Delap sprung in transition in the 53rd mission and unselfishly squared the ball back to Hutchinson at the top of the box. The Jamaican international calmly dribbled past both Moises Caicedo and Axel Disasi before slotting the ball into the corner of the net. Hutchinson showed no restraint with his celebration, sprinting for the corner flag while vaulting into a wild somersault backflip routine.
While Ipswich Town may have captured the headlines, the Blues were not completely hopeless. Maresca's team managed 20 shots and hit the woodwork twice, accumulating 1.99 xG to Ipwich's 0.67.
Chelsea now sit behind Liverpool (45 points), Nottingham Forest (37), and Arsenal (36) in the Premier League table with 35 points. The Blues will look to rebound in 2025 with a trip to Crystal Palace on Jan 4.

Following a draw in early October with Arsenal, Chelsea won each Premier League game until a 0-0 draw with Everton on Dec. 22. The Blues then lost 2-1 to Fulham away before losing to Ipswich on Monday.
Liverpool will look to stretch its lead atop the table when Arne Slot's team hosts a struggling Manchester United side on Jan 5. The Red Devils also lost on Monday, falling 2-0 at home to Newcastle United.
