Cole Palmer is expected to have a scan on the injury that left him limping out of Old Trafford, with Chelsea hoping he suffered a lucky escape.

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca was insistent that Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez should have been sent off for his late lunge on Palmer during the clubs’ 1-1 draw on Sunday.

The wild tackle from Martínez left Palmer with stud marks on his left knee and it is understood the 22-year-old limped his way out of Old Trafford with soreness that continued on his journey back to London.

Chelsea’s initial hope was that Palmer’s soreness would settle down and that he had suffered no serious damage that would rule him out of the next Premier League game against Arsenal.

But Chelsea are expected to scan Palmer to be sure of the extent of the injury and receive formal confirmation that he did indeed suffer no more than a lucky escape.

Palmer was not included in Chelsea’s Europa Conference League squad, with the club hosting Armenian side Noah on Thursday, so the England international’s only aim is to be fit enough to start against Arsenal on Sunday. Chelsea believe United set up to try to nullify Palmer and the forward can also expect to be a marked man against Arsenal.

Sánchez set for another chance as Chelsea No 1

It took a moment of magic from in-form midfielder Moisés Caicedo to rescue a point for Chelsea after goalkeeper Robert Sánchez had given United the opportunity to take the lead by conceding a penalty.

Sánchez has faced criticism for some of his performances this season, but he has received the backing of Maresca and Chelsea retain full belief in his talent.

The feeling within the club is that Sánchez has all the ingredients to be one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and that his decision-making will eventually catch up with his talent.

Despite being the oldest regular starter in a young Chelsea squad, Sánchez, 26, is still viewed as being relatively young for a goalkeeper and it is hoped that his performances will continue to improve as he matures.

Another player Chelsea retain faith in is central defender Benoit Badiashile, who has fallen behind Levi Colwill in the Stamford Bridge pecking order.

It is understood that Chelsea have no plans for 23-year-old Badisahile to leave the club and that he is part of their long-term strategy.

While he and Colwill are predominantly seen as left-sided centre-backs, the pair showed they can play together against Liverpool at Anfield when the Frenchman replaced Tosin Adarabioyo as a substitute.

Badiashile has started all of Chelsea’s Europa Conference League games to date and is expected to start against Armenian club Noah in the competition on Thursday night.
