Chelsea issued obvious Mathys Tel transfer message with Nicolas Jackson problem not going away

We have seen that before, haven't we? Yes, about a million times, to be honest. And that is only this season...

Chelsea had 26 shots, with 10 on target. Bournemouth had seven, with three on target. Chelsea finished with an xG of 2.72. Bournemouth finished with an xG of 1.37. Chelsea finished with two goals. As did Bournemouth.

Nicolas Jackson could not have started the game any better. On 13 minutes, he produced a moment of magic with his tenacity, determination and power seeing him evade three Bournemouth players to make some space for himself. Jackson then found Cole Palmer with a perfectly-weighted through ball and the Blues' No.20 did the rest.

It was a reminder of Jackson's brilliance. And he can be brilliant. Enzo Maresca said just over 24 hours before that Jackson is judged not only on his goals, but what he offers the team with his all-round play. To be fair to the 23-year-old striker, his all-round play is very good but his lack of ruthlessness in front of goal cost Chelsea on Tuesday night.

The Senegal international had a number of clear-cut opportunities that he could not convert. It felt immediately after Palmer's opening goal that Chelsea needed a second to kill the game off - as they failed to do against Fulham on Boxing Day, and more recently, Crystal Palace just over 10 days ago - but they could not find it. In fact, Chelsea have now dropped seven points from winning positions in their last four Premier League outings.

It is not just on Jackson of course. There were a few Chelsea players that could have done better with their opportunities. It is not for a lack of creation - as the statistics tell you. The creation is there, the killer touch is not.

"It was probably one of our best first-halves of the season; the way we were playing on the ball and off the ball," Maresca said post-match. "We were creating so many chances. I think we had around 15 shots.

"The first-half has to finish with a different score. I think 2-0 is the one we deserved. Then in the second-half, after a penalty, the game completely changed.

"We dropped a little bit, we need to understand the reason why. The feeling is a little bit of shame because when you play like you did in the first-half, which I thought was really, really good, you have to be clinical."

Pressed on whether the pattern of missed opportunities and lost points is a concern, the head coach added: "I'm always concerned even when we win. For sure, every game is different. Tonight, after the penalty we concede, we change and drop a little bit. They are the moments when you need to show a little bit of your character and personality.

"The game was completely 100% under control, but then we need to understand the reason why we drop after the penalty. I'm worried always but I'm more worried when we don't create and you don't play well. When we create, hopefully we can be more lucky in the future."

Jackson is good enough for Chelsea. Some will disagree but that is my honest opinion. Despite missing plenty of clear-cut chances along the way in his season-and-a-half at Stamford Bridge, the good outweighs the bad in this case. However, the lack of competition for the No.9 slot is a concern.

Maresca has Christopher Nkunku, who, if reports are to be believed from Germany, is keen to leave the club this month. We know Bayern Munich are seriously interested in signing the France international and entered talks with Chelsea a few days ago.

On top of that, Maresca has said himself; he does not see Nkunku as a striker, instead he views the 27-year-old as more of a No.10. So then it is just the 18-year-old Marc Guiu, who yes, has a promising future ahead of him, but does not look completely ready to be seriously competing with Jackson yet.

Mathys Tel? The 19-year-old is extremely highly-rated by many across Europe and Chelsea have done more than their due diligence on the German attacker. Again, though, he does not appear to be an out-and-out No.9; more of a versatile forward that can be used anywhere across the front-line.

Chelsea are interested in signing Tel and football.london understands the Blues will not hesitate to submit an offer to Bayern should the German giants give the club any form of encouragement that they would be willing to sell the forward this month.

Tel or not - something needs to give. Jackson needs more competition. Chelsea need more goals; that much is obvious.

In their five-match winless run in the Premier League, the numbers do not make for great reading from Chelsea's point of view. The Blues have had 85 shots, with 31 of them on target, but have scored just four goals.
