Chelsea have been in contact with Bayern Munich over a possible deal to sign Mathys Tel this month, football.london understands.

The Blues are long time admirers of the French teenager and made an enquiry to sign him last summer. Around six months later and the west Londoners have once again asked the German club whether Tel would be available to leave the Allianz Arena in the January transfer window.

Chelsea would make an offer for Tel should Bayern give the Blues any sort of encouragement that the teenage forward is available this month.

However, Chelsea have not discussed or offered Christopher Nkunku as part of a swap deal with Bayern. The Germans, though, are interested in signing the France international, who has made only three starts in the Premier League for the Blues under head coach Enzo Maresca.

Nkunku is the club's joint-top scorer this term with 13 goals to his name, the same total as Cole Palmer, but has been in and out of the side when it comes to the Premier League. The Frenchman has been used as essentially a deputy to Nicolas Jackson so far this season and is understood to be frustrated with his role in the squad.

Meanwhile, Tel, who has been on Chelsea's radar for some time now, signed a contract extension at Bayern in March of last year. However, the Frenchman has made only seven appearances under Vincent Kompany in the Bundesliga this season.

At the time of penning a new contract at the Allianz, Bayern's sporting director shared these comments about Tel: "Every club wants players like Mathys Tel; young, extremely talented, hungry and willing to learn. The way he already plays at this level at the age of 18 is something special.

"We want the right mix in our squad, and Mathys plays an important role here. He knows what makes FC Bayern tick, he feels comfortable and at home here. Now we're taking the next steps together and are looking forward to the coming years with him."
