Chelsea Mauricio Pochettino 43-word statement speaks volumes as Todd Boehly silent
Mauricio Pochettino is no longer the Chelsea manager. After facing persistent calls to be sacked throughout a disappointing season - which actually ended well - Pochettino has left the Blues after just one season in charge.
Chelsea were languishing in mid-table in the Premier League for much of the 2023/24 campaign, but had turned things around since the turn of the year. The Blues were only behind Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool in the form table in 2024 and won every one of their last five matches to finish sixth and qualify for European football next season - something that looked well out of the question earlier in the campaign.
Pochettino appeared to have turned things around, but new questions reared their heads following their 2-1 win over Bournemouth on the final day of the season. Pochettino did not take part in the lap of honour at Stamford Bridge and was asked about his future straight afterwards.
And now those questions have been answered, with Pochettino leaving Chelsea by mutual consent on Tuesday night. And the statement on the Blues official website speaks volumes.
The Blues offered just 43 words on Pochettino's departure and they did not even come from owners Todd Boehly or Behdad Eghbali, instead from sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley.
The statement read: "On behalf of everyone at Chelsea, we would like to express our gratitude to Mauricio for his service this season. He will be welcome back to Stamford Bridge any time and we wish him all the very best in his future coaching career."
Pochettino himself was afforded some space to say goodbye, saying: "Thank you to the Chelsea ownership group and sporting directors for the opportunity to be part of this football club's history. The club is now well positioned to keep moving forward in the Premier League and Europe in the years to come."
