Chelsea's hopes of bringing Champions League football back to Stamford Bridge next season took a huge hit on Saturday evening as Enzo Maresca's men suffered a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City.

Despite Noni Madueke putting them ahead, the Blues were second best at the Etihad Stadium. Josko Gvardiol's equaliser late in the first half was followed by Erling Haaland capitalising on Robert Sanches' mistake, before Phil Foden's late strike.

The English champions are now ahead of Chelsea in the Premier League standings by one point - in fourth place. Newcastle's 3-1 win at Southampton means the west Londoners are now joint seventh with Bournemouth - who thrashed Nottingham Forest 5-0 in an eye-catching result.
