Chelsea physio Steve Hughes to leave Stamford Bridge in latest exit from medical department

Chelsea physiotherapist Steve Hughes will leave the club at the end of the month after more than 22 years.

The Blues have been aware of the change since September, when the announcement of his eventual departure was communicated internally via email.

Hughes is the latest in a long line of departures from the medical department at Stamford Bridge, with long-term medical director Dimitrios Kalogiannidis also leaving last month.

The previous medical director, Paco Biosca, left in October 2022, with head physio Thierry Laurent also exiting the following month.

Physios Jose Calvarro, Jason Palmer and Jon Fearn all left after the World Cup, after around a decade of service each.

Chelsea currently have Chris Hughes as their first-team doctor and Martin Baker serving as the main first-team physiotherapist, tending to injured players.

Fearghal Kerin has been hired from Leinster Rugby as a rehabilitation physiotherapist and Dave Fevre is also acting as a consultant.

Chelsea know they have been suffering from a higher than expected number of hamstring injuries so far this season and aim to hire a couple more specialists before the season ends.

Training Ground Guru have reported that Ed Richmond is about to join Chelsea's physio department from Leicester.
